This is My Son, With Whom I’m Well Pleased

“And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” – Matthew 3:16-17

This past Sunday we celebrated the baptism of Jesus. Jesus’ baptism is the start of His ministry and it begins with Jesus’ identity being revealed.

As Jesus comes up out of the water, the heavens were opened, the Spirit of God descended in bodily form like a dove, and the Father spoke. In much of the Scriptures, we encounter one person of the Trinity at a time, but here we encounter the full triune God, Father, Son, and Spirit.

Jesus is clearly identified as the Son of God and the Father expresses His delight in Jesus.

John the Baptist saw and heard all this. Can you imagine? What a wonderful day that must have been for Him.

Amazingly, God has provided ways for all of us to encounter Him. He has given us His Word, in which He reveals Himself, His Spirit who guides and comforts us (among many other things), His sacraments, where we partake of the very body and blood of Christ. We may not physically see God, as John did that day, but it is real and powerful none-the-less.

What an awesome God we have that He reveals Himself to us and deals with us directly, caring for, comforting, and working in us every day.

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for coming to us and being with us.  Open my eyes to see You each and every day. May I walk in Your ways and bring glory to Your name that others may also see You and glorify Your holy name.

Amen.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Kurt
