Who's Your CBFF?

Do you have a BFF? Who is it?
If you’re not familiar with the acronym BFF, it stands for Best Friend Forever. When growing up, a lot of kids have best friends, maybe even more than one. As we get older, things can change a bit. With the exception of a spouse, many people don’t have many (or any) close friends. Sure, they may have people they hang out with, but I’m talking about people with whom you share your deepest dreams, fears, and failures.
It’s a good thing to have a friend like that, in general. It’s really good, even important, to have a Christian friend like that. This is what I’m calling a CBFF (All rights reserved 😉 )
James 5 describes that kind of friend, even friends. CBFFs are the people who will be there for you at the drop of a hat. They are people who will pray for you, not only when there’s something wrong, but any old day. These are people with whom you are close enough you can confess your sins.
Do you have a CBFF?
If not, I encourage you to work towards having one. Finding someone who will pray you and for whom you will pray regularly, shouldn’t be too hard. Finding someone you feel comfortable enough to confess your sins to may be a little harder and it may take some time to work to that point. You have to truly love and trust one another.
Why does it matter?
It matters for two reasons.
- Prayer is powerful. Don’t underestimate what having one or maybe even a few people praying for you on a regular basis can do for you.
- Confession and Absolution (forgiveness) gives peace and rest. As Lutherans, we confess our sins in church regularly, but the confession of specific sins in private and hearing those sins are forgiven can easy a weary and burdened soul.
Take a few minutes to think about who might be a good CBFF for you, maybe even a few people. Then start building those relationships.
Heavenly Father,
You have given us so many blessings, not the least of which is Your church. In Your church, You provide people who can walk with us, care for us, encourage us, and pray for us. Help me to find a person(s) who will pray for me, care for me, and with whom I can confess my sins.
