What Is True?

What Is True?

We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true — even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.” – 1 John 5:20

What is true in your life?

We live in a world where the very existence of truth is questioned. People talk about having “your truth” or “my truth.” This is a relatively new concept. However, the battle between truth and lies is not new.

Your Truth, My Truth, The Truth
Is it true that what is true for you may not be true for me? Well, it is true that you may like anchovies on your pizza and I may not. It’s also true that your experience with Ford and Honda vehicles may be different from mine causing you to trust Fords while I trust Hondas. However, these are actually preferences, not what has historically been referred to as truth.

Similarly, you may believe that Leprechauns exist (It’s March). However, that, also, isn’t necessarily true. That’s a belief and a belief may be true or it may be false.

In reality, truth is truth. There is no personalization of it. Either you accept the truth or you don’t, but that doesn’t change what is true. You may have opinions, preferences, and beliefs, but those don’t change what is true.

If your truth isn’t the truth, your truth is a lie.

Lies aren’t new. Lies have existed since the serpent in the Garden of Eden. The world is filled with lies. The idea that truth is relative is only one of the more recent lies.

Ultimately, lies all exist to cloud your vision and keep you from seeing and knowing the truth. However, the truth is a powerful thing and that which is true is stronger than any lie.

God Is Truth.

God is different than you and me in many ways. One of those differences is that God is pure truth. Notice that 1 John 5:20 doesn’t say that God speaks the truth, but that He is true. Nothing in Him is false.

Jesus, the Son of God, is truth and He revealed the truth. Through Him and His Word, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we are given the understanding to know what is really true and know He who is really true. Through Him we not only know the truth but are in the truth.

Only by knowing Him who is truth and being in He who is truth, can we truly know the truth.

Dear Jesus,

You have lived a life that is true. You have spoken only the truth. You have revealed the truth. You are the one, true God. Open my mind to understand the truth and to know You, the Father, and the Spirit, who is the one, true God.

Amen.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Kurt
