Romans 1:26-32 "God Gave Them Over to Their Sin"

For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

Video Notes:

  • Going back a few verses, we see that people suppress their knowledge of God through nature and their conscience and dull their hearts and mind. They start by exchanging the worship of the creator for worshiping created things.
  • God gives them over into their foolishness. This then leads to perversions, including homosexuality. They exchange natural relations between men and women with unnatural homosexual relations, nature being God’s design of nature. God gives them into their perversions. It feels normal now. There is nothing in the language which indicates anything more restrictive than men with men and women with women.
  • Their minds and hearts descend into even more so into all kinds of sin.
  • This is a natural progression of sin. First, reject the creator. With no creator (or a false creator), the morality of God can be ignored. The more we suppress the knowledge of God and the Law written on our hearts, the further we sink into depravity and we continue to dull our consciences.
  • Even with this dulling, we know that there is right and wrong and that doing wrong has the consequence of death, but we ignore it. Having sunk so far, the person then gives approval to others who sin. Sin loves company.
  • We absolutely see this progression going on in our society right now.
