Romans 3:1-8 "God is Faithful and Righteous No Matter What"

Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? 2 Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. 3 What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? 4 By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written,

“That you may be justified in your words,
and prevail when you are judged.”

5 But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.) 6 By no means! For then how could God judge the world? 7 But if through my lie God’s truth abounds to his glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? 8 And why not do evil that good may come?—as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just.

Video Notes:

  • Paul writes this section in the form of an argument, setting up one steel man after another and knocking down every objection.
  • What is the advantage of being a Jew? They had the sayings (oracles) of God. However, as we heard in chapter 2, Israel was not faithful to what God said (His commands and covenant).
  • Should their unfaithfulness and disobedience cause God to become unfaithful to His promises? This shouldn’t even enter your mind!!
  • “Let God be true though every one were a liar” – In other words, God will still be true even if every person lies in their promise to God or lies about God’s faithfulness.
  • Psalm 51:4 God is righteous and true in His judgments.
  • If our being so bad just makes God look better (our unrighteousness showing His righteousness) can He really punish us for making Him look better? No! Or all sin goes unpunished. Furthermore, if judging our sin made God unrighteous, He couldn’t do it because He is and always shall be righteous. This is ridiculous.
  • Now Paul gets personal in vs 7.
  • God’s truth (faithfulness)
  • Some people were saying that the Gospel message of salvation by grace, where our sins are forgiven, encourages people to sin. Furthermore, saying that God is glorified and His righteousness shown in that forgiveness means we should sin as much as possible to show God’s righteousness and give Him glory as much as possible. But this is not what Paul taught nor what the Gospel implies.
  • So, for their slander and rejection of the Gospel, their condemnation is just.
