Romans Bible Study

Romans 5:20-21 "The Law Increases the Trespass?"

Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Video Notes:

  • What does it mean that the Law was brought in that the trespass might increase?
  • In previous parts of Romans there has been a distinction between sin and trespass, but here they are synonymous as is shown by the terms being used interchangeably in vs 20.
  • There are two ways the trespass increased…
    • Romans 3:20 – A greater awareness of the trespass.
    • Romans 7:7-8 – Our sinful nature seized on the knowledge of the Law to sin even more.
  • This reinforces the idea that no one is saved by the Law.
  • So, the Law didn’t usher in a new dispensation by which we might be saved, quite the opposite. The Law increased the trespass, however, grace increased even more. God’s plan of salvation by grace through faith is unshaken. No matter how much sin multiplies, grace overflows even more. You can’t out sin God’s grace.
  • This leads us to our next question, “If where sin increased, grace increased, should we sin more to get more grace?” Paul answers this in chapter 6 which we’ll start tomorrow.
