Romans 6:6-11 "No Longer Slaves to Sin"

We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Video Notes:

  • Just because the old self was crucified doesn’t mean it’s not still there. However, we are no longer slaves to sin. We don’t have to obey our sinful desires. We can battle our sinful nature and resist sin.
  • Colossians 3:9-10 and Ephesians 4:22-24
  • Now, but not yet. Our sinful self was defeated in our baptism, but it still has influence. It will be fully gone at Christ’s return.
  • “For one who has died has been set free from sin.” “Set free” should really be “justified.”
  • This is all still talking about our baptism. When were we crucified with Christ, in our baptism (Romans 6:3, 4, and 5). Baptism is the death of our enslavement to sin and the beginning of the new life we have in Christ. This will all reach it’s fulness at Christ’s return, but what about now. Now, we live with Christ and walk in the newness of life, putting off or battling against the old sinful self.
  • Notice how we are joined with Christ throughout verses 1-8. This is another reason the idea of continuing in sin is so repulsive. You have been united with Christ.
  • We find out assurance of our current state and what is to come in the completed past action/event of Jesus death and resurrection. Christ will never die again. He has conquered death and thus He can deliver us from death.
  • You have died to sin in your baptism. Why? Because you are united with Christ in His death and “the death he died he died to sin, once for all” You also live because you are united with Christ in your baptism and the life He lives He lives to God.
  • So, you (the baptized) should believe what God has said happened in your baptism and continues to happen to you and you should live accordingly.
