The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

Romans 8 has established that through our baptism, we are made adopted children of God.
Romans 8 has also established that all who believe in Jesus have the Holy Spirit in them.
Now, we see one of the things the Spirit is doing for us. (He does many things.) He testifies, or bears witness, that we are, indeed, children of God.
The Holy Spirit doesn’t bear witness alone, but along with your spirit. This brings to mind the rule of two witnesses to confirm truth (Deuteronomy 17:6 and John 8:17-18)
It’s unclear who the Holy Spirit and our spirit are bearing witness to.
It is in this two-fold witness, the Holy Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we once again are assured of the truth that we have been adopted as children of God.
