What Is Sin?

Understanding what sin is can be challenging due to the various ways people use the word and what is considered sin by different people. However, misunderstanding sin can lead to all kinds of other misunderstandings, including whether we need a savior.

So, let’s take a look at what sin is:

1. Definition of Sin

  • Sin is the transgression of God’s divine law, encompassing any thought, word, or deed that deviates from His perfect will.
  • It originated with the disobedience of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, resulting in a sinful nature passed down to all humanity.

 2. Universality of Sin

Romans 3:23 emphasizes that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” highlighting sin’s universal impact on every human being.

3. Consequences of Sin

  • Sin causes a rupture in the relationship between humans and God, leading to spiritual death and eternal separation from our Creator.
  • Left unaddressed, sin results in the forfeiture of eternal life and communion with God.

4. Dependence on God’s Grace

The Bible clearly indicates that human efforts and good works cannot save us from sin’s consequences. We rely solely on God’s grace, which is a gift freely given through faith in Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of our sins.

5. Role of Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ, through His sacrificial death and resurrection, paid the penalty for our sins and offers the gift of eternal life to all who believe in Him. He is the ultimate source of redemption and restoration to a right relationship with God.

6. The Act of Repentance

  • Genuine repentance involves acknowledging our sins, approaching God with humility and contrition, and seeking His forgiveness.
  • Through repentance and faith in Christ, we receive the assurance of God’s pardon and reconciliation.

7. Living a Transformed Life

As believers, we are called to resist sin and live in accordance with God’s Word, reflecting the love and righteousness of Christ in our actions and attitudes. The Holy Spirit empowers us to live a transformed life, constantly renewing our hearts and minds. We will never be fully free of sin in our lives until Jesus returns. So, in addition to striving to live according God’s commands, we live a life of repentance, always relying on God’s grace for our salvation.

Conclusion

Sin is a reality that affects all humanity. Nevertheless, God’s grace, offered through Jesus Christ to all humanity, provides the means for redemption and restoration. As Lutherans, we seek to humbly repent, rely on God’s mercy, and live transformed lives blessed to follow the teachings of Christ.
