Romans 9:30-10:4 “Pursuing Righteousness by Works vs Faith”

What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith; 31 but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law. 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, 33 as it is written,

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense;

and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

10 Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

Video Notes:

  • Romans 2:12-13; Romans 3:23-24, 28
  • Gentiles – They didn’t try to make themselves righteous before hearing the Gospel. After hearing the Gospel, they received it in faith, trusting God for their righteousness, and were made righteous.
  • Jews – Before hearing the Gospel tried to make themselves righteous on their own by following God’s Law. After hearing the Gospel, they found it offensive (that they were sinners just like the Gentiles) and rejected it. Thus, they are not righteous because no one becomes righteous by the Law. They didn’t earn it nor did they receive it.
    • Note that this isn’t all Jews, but is focusing on those who rejected Jesus. Some received the Gospel by faith.
    • Isaiah 28:16, 8:14 – In 28:16 the stone is spoken of positively. In 8:14 the stone is both a sanctuary (for those who believe) but also offensive and causing stumbling for many in Israel (those who do not believe).
      • Romans 1:16-17
  • Paul reiterates his desire for all Jews to be saved. In trying to submit to God their own way, they end up not submitting to God at all.
    • 2 Kings 5:10-13
    • Romans 9-11 is perhaps the primary section of the Bible that people who argue for double predestination (God predestines some people to heaven and the rest to hell from the beginning of time without regard to the people). The fact that this section also contains numerous passages where Paul is saying how much he wants them to be saved and bears witness for them to be saved, is another thing that shows the folly of this teaching.
  • Jesus is the end (the culmination) of the Law (Torah) for righteousness for everyone who believes because they are now righteous by faith.
    • Not correct:
      • Jesus is the end of Law (God’s commands). We don’t need to pay attention to the Law anymore in any way. Jesus says not one iota of the Law will be removed.
      • Jesus ends the era of the Law (God’s commands) as a means of salvation and now only faith is the means of salvation. Faith has always been the only means of salvation as was argued earlier in Romans, in Galatians, and elsewhere.
    • Law in this case refers to the entire Torah, meaning it’s both the commands of God and the promises of God. The purpose and goal of both has always been Jesus and the salvation He brings. You can also include in this that Jesus fulfilled the Law as part of the salvation He brought.
    • Those who believe have received this end, this goal/purpose. Those who do not believe have not received it.
