The Other Six Daily Devotion - Genesis 16:13–14

"The God Who Sees"

“So she [Hagar] called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.” Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; it lies between Kadesh and Bered.”

What is the most alone you have ever felt?

The Other Six - Faith Lutheran Church, Wesley Chapel, FL - Woman alone on stepsHagar is alone.

Sent away, mistreated, and now wandering in the wilderness, she finds herself in a place no one plans to be. She is not the main character of the story. She has little power, little voice, and no clear future.

And yet, that’s where God meets her.

The Angel of the Lord finds Hagar by a spring in the desert. He speaks to her, calls her by name, and gives her a promise about what is to come. In the middle of her isolation, she is not overlooked. She is not alone.

And Hagar responds with something remarkable.

She gives God a name: “You are the God who sees me.”

Not just a God who sees everything in general—but a God who sees her. In her situation…her pain. In a place where she likely felt invisible.

That’s what makes this moment so powerful.

God’s attention is not limited to the obvious or the important. He does not only work through the strong or the central figures. He sees the overlooked, the pushed aside, the ones who feel like their story doesn’t matter.

And He sees you.

There are seasons where life feels like that wilderness. When you’re carrying something heavy and it seems like no one really understands. When you’re doing your best just to keep going, and it feels unnoticed.

But you are not unseen!

God sees where you are. He knows what you’re facing. He speaks into your life, even when it feels like no one is there.

Daily Devotion - Faith Lutheran Church, Wesley Chapel, FL - Couple on rocksAnd His seeing is not passive. He doesn’t just observe from a distance. When God sees, He acts.

  • He meets
  • He speaks
  • He provides
  • He leads

For Hagar, that moment at the spring didn’t solve everything instantly. But it changed something deeper. She knew she had been seen by God—and that meant she was not alone in what lay ahead.

That’s still true.

You may not have all the answers today. The path forward may still feel uncertain. But the God who sees you is already there, already at work, already speaking. And He already knows the plans He has for you.

And that changes everything.

Let’s pray…

Heavenly Father,

You are the One who sees me. In moments when I feel overlooked or alone, remind me that You are near and attentive. Help me trust that You know my situation and are at work, even when I can’t see it clearly. Thank You for meeting me where I am.

Amen.

As part of your devotion time, I encourage you to also pray for at least some of the following:

  • Your family
  • Your local church
  • Your pastor
  • Some of your fellow church members
  • The people on your B.L.E.S.S. list
  • Your country and her leaders
  • Your community

After praying for these people, you may want to finish your devotion time with the Lord’s Prayer…

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. They will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and every. Amen.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Kurt
