In the beginning, God created the heavens and earth. This isn’t just a historical statement to let us know how things came into existence. It tells us who we are in relation to God and whose we are.
“Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.” – 1 Chronicles 29:11
God is the creator of all things.
That includes you and me. We are the creation. We are His.
We like to tell God how we want things. We often read the commands of God as mere suggestions. However, when we acknowledge that He is our almighty creator, this changes everything.
God’s commands are unquestionable. This is His world and He can run it how He pleases. I used to have a professor in the seminary who, when speaking of God’s might and identity as creator, would say something like,
“Might makes right and God has all the might.”
We may bristle against a statement like this. After all, in our human experience, “might makes right” often refers to horrible abuses by some tyrannical dictator. However, there is truth in the statement. We are God’s, He is almighty, and so…
He gets to set the rules.
Thankfully, God isn’t just almighty, He is good, loving, and gracious. He’s nothing like a tyrannical dictator. Yet, we often still think that we know better. We judge God’s morality and decide our morality is…well… more moral. I’m reminded of God’s response to Job when Job questioned God.
“Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?”…The Lord said to Job: “Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!”” – Job 38:1-5; 40:1-2
This is just a snippet. God’s response goes on for five chapters (Job 38-42). I encourage you to read the whole thing, but this snippet gives you a sense of what it says,
Who are we to question God?
However, when we acknowledge God’s might and that He is our creator as we are His and we seek to follow His ways, we discover they are truly good. This is what the psalmist discovered in Psalm 19:8
“The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.”
Surely, our almighty, creator God is good, righteous, and loving.
His ways are good and right. His love is great. He shows His love for His creation every day. He demonstrated His love for us unmistakenly in Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.
So, we do not simply acknowledge God as almighty creator but state boldly and happily that He is our Lord. We seek His will and trust His ways and we look forward to the day when He fully restores His creation.
Almighty God,
You are my Lord and my God. I am wholly Yours. Help me to trust Your ways. Thank You for loving me and caring for me.
Amen.
