I and the Father are One

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.  Isaiah 9:6-7

Everlasting Father may seem out of place here at first. Isn’t this a prophecy about Jesus? Jesus is the Son. Everlasting Father seems like a title which belongs to God the Father, not Jesus. Yet, here it is.

The reason this may seem strange is because we tend to struggle with the concept of the Trinity. We could be fine if there were only one person in the Trinity (which wouldn’t be called Trinity anymore) or if the three persons would just be separate, but they aren’t.

Jesus said, I and the Father are one. He tells us that if we want to know what the Father is like, we should look at Him. He is the perfect representation of the Father. So, while generally we see the Jesus role in the Trinity as the Son, His unity with the Father means that He is the Father. In this same passage, we also see Jesus referred to as Counselor, which is usually reserved for the Holy Spirit.

So, what does this mean for us, today? First we see a little into who God is, the three in one, the Trinity. Second, we see Jesus love for us, like the love of a Father, as well as His protection and provision. Finally, we see His eternity. Jesus is forever. No beginning and no end. His provision for us is eternal. His protection is eternal. His love is eternal.

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for loving and caring for us in an everlasting way. We know You will never leave us nor forsake us. Help me to know and understand You more and more every day.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Amen

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Kurt
