Light In the Darkness

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'” – John 8:12

Have you ever been in complete darkness?

I can remember on several occasions visiting caverns both as a child and an adult. It’s always amazing to see the various rock formations and colors. However, what most sticks out in my memory is that on every tour I’ve done, at one point in the tour they turn off all the lights.

There you are in complete darkness. This isn’t dark like going into a room before turning on the lights or walking through woods on a moonless night. This is so dark you can’t even see your hand right in front of you. You can’t see anything.

It’s an odd sensation. Nothing, really, has changed in your situation. Your standing in the same place. The same people are around you. There’s no threat or danger. Yet, you start to feel uneasy. Fear begins to creep in.

A World In Darkness
Our world is in spiritual darkness. It is filled with fear and doubt. People grope around for anything to hold onto to give some sense of safety and comfort. However, without light, we cannot find true safety or comfort.

Jesus Is the Light of the World
Light has an amazing effect on us.

  • We feel more comfortable.
  • We can see where we are going.
  • We can see the dangers around us.
  • We can find shelter.
  • We can move with confidence.
  • We can see people for who they really are.
  • …and so much more.

Jesus is that light for us. He comforts and guides us. He protects and shelters us. He disperses the darkness. With Christ, we can have confidence. We can see the world for what it is and we can see people for the wonderful creation they are.

Most importantly, Jesus shows us the way to God. In fact, He is the way to God. He is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him.

With Christ, we no longer need to walk in darkness. We can bask in the light of His life for all eternity. After all, He tells us that when we go to live with Him for all eternity, there will be no need for the sun, because He will be our light, and there will be no more darkness.

Dear Jesus,

You are the Light of the World. Turn the light on in my life. Disperse the darkness. Guide me and protect me in this life and lead me to the Father.

Amen.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Kurt
