Welcome

Invocation

Confession and Forgiveness:

P: As we gather, today, let us cleanse our hearts and our consciences by confessing our sin to God.

(Time of silence for reflection and confession)

C: Heavenly Father, we confess that we are sinful and unclean. We have sinned against you and against our neighbor in our thoughts, words, and actions.  We are truly sorry for our sins and sincerely repent of them. We ask for Your mercy. For the sake of Jesus Christ’s bitter suffering and death, please forgive us and renew us that we may walk in Your Spirit to the glory of Your holy name.

P: The Lord has heard your confession. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of the Lord, in the stead and by the command of my Lord, Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen

Song of Praise and Thanksgiving: Beautiful Savior

Beautiful Savior, King of creation,
Son of God and Son of man.
Truly I’d love Thee, Truly I’d serve Thee
Light of my soul, my joy, my crown.

Fair are the meadows.  Fair is the woodlands
Robed in the flow’rs of blooming spring
Jesus is fairer. Jesus is purer.
He makes our sorrowing spirit sing

Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations, Son of God and Son of man.
Glory and honor, praise adoration, Now and forever more be Thine!

Gospel Reading – Mark 10:32–45

And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise.”

And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” And they said to him, “We are able.”

And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Children’s Message

Sermon Hymn – Not All The Blood of Beasts

Not all the blood of beasts on Jewish altars slain,
Could give the guilty conscience peace or wash away the stain.

But Christ, the heav’nly Lamb, takes all our sins away.
A sacrifice of nobler name and richer blood than they.

Chorus:
Jesus, the great high priest, of the greatest and the least
Both priest and perfect sacrifice to cleanse us from our sin.

My faith would lay its hand on that dear head of Thine,
While as a penitent I stand and there confess my sin.

My soul looks back to see the burden Thou didst bear,
When hanging on the cursed tree, I know my guilt was there.

Chorus

Believing, we rejoice to see the curse remove;
We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice, and sing His bleeding love.

Sermon – “Your Pastor and Your High Priest”

Hebrews 5:1–10

For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him,

“You are my Son,
    today I have begotten you”;
as he says also in another place,
“You are a priest forever,
    after the order of Melchizedek.”

In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Prayers

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God
the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen

Pastoral Confession and Forgiveness:

P: In Hebrews chapter 5, God tells us, “For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people.” I, your pastor, stand before you as a sinner, needing the forgiveness and grace of Jesus Christ.

C: Confess and receive God’s forgiveness.

P: I confess that I have sinned against God, against you my congregation, and against my neighbor outside the church. I have not loved God with my whole heart. I have not loved you as the shepherd God has called me to be. I have not loved my neighbor as myself. I have, at times, neglected my duties to you and have broken the commands of God. Yet, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. Heavenly Father, for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.  Forgive me, renew me, and lead me, so that we may joyfully serve in the ministry to which You have called me. I also ask you, my congregation, in light of the grace of Jesus Christ, to forgive me, that I may serve you in faithful ministry, unencumbered by the guilt of my sin. Amen.

C: Hear the promise of God, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” We announce to you the grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ. He has forgiven your sins and removed your guilt. Also, as your congregation, those washed of our sins in the waters of baptism, we also forgive you. Go in peace, teach us God’s Word, care for us in His Name, and feed us through His supper. Amen.

Closing Song: What a Beautiful Name

You were the Word at the beginning
One with God the Lord Most High
Your hidden glory in creation
Now revealed in You Our Christ

Chorus 1:
What a beautiful Name it is, what a beautiful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a beautiful Name it is, nothing compares to this
What a beautiful Name it is, The Name of Jesus

You didn’t want heaven without us
So Jesus You brought heaven Down
My sin was great, Your love was greater
What could separate us now

Chorus 2
What a wonderful Name it is, what a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a wonderful Name it is, nothing compares to this
What a wonderful Name it is, The Name of Jesus
What a wonderful Name it is, The Name of Jesus

Death could not hold you, the veil tore before You
You silenced the boast of sin and grave
The heavens are roaring, the praise of Your glory
For you are raised to life again
You have no rival, You have no Equal
Now and forever God You reign
Yours is the Kingdom, Yours is the glory
Yours is the Name above all names

Chorus 3:
What a powerful Name it is, what a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a powerful Name it is, nothing can stand against
What a powerful Name it is, The Name of Jesus
What a powerful Name it is, The Name of Jesus
What a powerful Name it is, The Name of Jesus
