Romans Bible Study

Romans 10:16-17 “Why Doesn't Everyone Believe in Jesus?”

But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Video Notes:

  • The Word of Christ – The Word concerning Christ, the Gospel. This is not simply the Word of God, which could just be Law. It’s Gospel with the possible inclusion of the Law with it pointing to the need for the Gospel.
  • The word order takes us backwards through the chronological order.
    • Chronologically, first comes the Word of Christ. The word is near to us.
    • Then we hear it.
    • Then we receive faith in the hearing.
  • The verbs are passive again, showing how we do not “Do” anything to obtain our salvation. It is done to us, but we can resist.
    • The only sense of doing we see is in the negative. We can resist. That’s not obeying the Gospel. It’s hearing, but resisting the Holy Spirit so we don’t listen responsively.
    • What do we “do” in Romans regarding salvation? We do works to earn righteousness and are condemned. We exchange the glory of God for created things and are condemned. We harden our hearts to God’s mercy and are condemned. We do not listen responsively and are condemned.
  • God’s mercy and especially the passive nature in which we receive it is offensive to our sinful selves.
