Romans 10:16 “Obeying the Gospel?”

But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?

Video Notes:

  • Obey?
    • “ὑπήκουσαν” with is the aorist active Indicative 3rd person plural of ὑπακούω. ακούω means “hear”. So, ὑπακούω means “under hear”. So, think of it as “To hear and do with it what should be done.”
    • Colossians 3:20, Luke 8:25 – Obey works, but it’s still the idea of listening responsively. We have a behavior chart for my son and one of the things he can get a magnet for is “listening”.
    • Acts 12:13, Hebrews 5:9, 2 Thessalonians 3:14  – Obey is problematic here as well.
    • Better to use something like, “listen responsively” or “hear in faith”.
  • The second part of the verse makes this clear. It quotes Isaiah 53:1 and uses the word “believe” instead of “obey”.
    • Isaiah goes on to prophesy about the suffering servant, the Messiah, Jesus.
  • John 6:25-29
