Romans 11:22 "God Is Both Kind and Severe"

Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.

Video Notes:

  • Kindness and severity
  • Severity – Judicial strictness.
  • This is another way of saying the God is righteous to show mercy and to condemn and He will do both accordingly.
  • We love to hear about God’s kindness, though we don’t always love to hear how God shows His kindness and gives it to us. We want God’s kindness on our own terms.
    • But God gives His kindness according to His own terms, by faith and as a gift.
    • God shows His kindness both by His mercy and His patience.
  • We don’t love to hear about God’s severity too often, but the message of God’s impending judgement is throughout the Bible. God will be just.
    • For those who stand in their unbelief cutting themselves off from God’s mercy, they stand in judgement awaiting condemnation.
    • Sometimes we are ok with the severity of God when it is applied to those who we think deserve it, but the truth is that we all deserve it.
    • The unbelief of those who have been cut off need not continue.
  • If you don’t believe in Jesus, hear the warning. God’s judgement will come. Jesus took that judgement for you on the cross so you could be forgiven and saved. Believe and be saved.
  • For you who do believe, may we always remain humble and grateful for the salvation we have received from God according to His kindness and may we always desire to share the Gospel with those who do not believe that they would be forgiven and saved.
