Romans 11:33-36 "God’s Unsearchable Judgment and Perfect Ways"

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord,

or who has been his counselor?”

35 “Or who has given a gift to him

    that he might be repaid?”

36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

Romans 12:1-8

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

Video Notes:

  • A beautiful doxology
  • Three triads
  • The attributes
    • The depth indicates how massive and bottomless they are.
    • Riches isn’t merely thinking of being able to provide, but rather the riches of God’s mercy and grace which were so prominent in the verses prior (Ephesians 1:7-9).
    • Wisdom isn’t merely things like the proverbs, but is Biblically associated to salvation, creation, and revelation.
    • Knowledge isn’t merely knowing things, but as we saw with God’s foreknowledge, has the relational component to it. God knows you intimately and more than anyone, even you know yourself.
  • God’s judgements and way are unfathomable and incomprehensible.
    • Isaiah55:6-9
  • The questions
    • Isaiah 40:13, Job 41:3
    • They continue to demonstrate the depths of God and how unfathomable He is.
    • The gifts question carries two connotations
      • God is the giver of all good things, we can’t give Him anything He didn’t give to us.
      • In relation to our works, we have nothing to offer God.
  • The prepositions
    • Colossians 1:16-17, 1 Corinthians 8:6
    • From Him – God created all things and all good things come from God. He is also the source of our salvation.
    • Through Him – All things were created through Jesus. We have life and salvation through Jesus. We have unity and adoption through Jesus.
    • To Him – Creation and redemption are to God. They are for Him and His good pleasure, according to His will, for His purposes, and bring us and all creation back to Him for all eternity.
  • These final verses appropriately finish focused on God.
  • As we move into Romans 12-16 for tomorrow’s worship service and for the remaining videos in this series, we need to keep one very important thing in mind. We must read 12-16 through the lens that we stand in our salvation by grace through faith or we will misread and misunderstand much in these chapters.
  • Read Romans 12:1-8
