Romans 15:4 "Written for Our Instruction"

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

Video Notes:

  • Much of the Old Testament is stories, historical accounts of things that happened. However, these are not simply history books.
  • The parts that are instructional are pretty obvious in how they teach us.
  • The historical parts teach us as well. They teach us God’s gracious and merciful nature not just by words, but by showing it to us in God’s interactions with mankind, especially, Israel, throughout the Scriptures. We see God’s might, His creative ability, His justice, His faithfulness, and so much more.
  • Israel, for me, has been a great source of comfort.
  • Additionally, this idea that the Old Testament is written to teach us also demonstrates the Christo centricity of the Old Testament. Simply put, the Old Testament is all about Jesus. It is constantly pointing us to Jesus and telling us about Him, even if not by name.
  • That excitement, joy, and passion are there for us, as we see so much about Jesus there. These are not moralistic stories. They are teaching us about God and our relationship with God. They are pointing us to Jesus and His salvation.
  • Sometimes, as Christians, we focus a lot on the New Testament and don’t pay much attention to the Old Testament and that’s too bad. Both testaments teach us. Both point us to Christ. Both bring us encouragement and endurance.
