Romans 16:20 "Jesus Will Crush satan!"

The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Video Notes:

  • It starts with a strange statement. The God of Peace will soon crush satan. The words peace and crush may seem strange at first. However, when you are at war, how do you bring peace? You defeat the enemy. God will defeat and utterly crush satan.
  • God brings us peace through Jesus Christ.
    • He brings us peace by rescuing us from captivity to sin and the devil, by defeating our enemy, by crushing satan.
  • Genesis 3:15
    • The seed of Eve has come and by His death and resurrection, Jesus has forgiven us and declared us righteous.
    • Satan, a name which means “the accuser”, can no longer accuse us.
    • Of course, the fact that we are no longer guilty doesn’t stop satan from accusing us, it’s just that his accusations have no merit. By faith we can simply respond by pointing to the cross.
      • Luther – “When the devil accuses us and says, ‘You are a sinner and therefore damned,’ we should answer, ‘Because you say I am a sinner, I will be righteous and saved.’  ‘No,’ says the devil, ‘you will be damned.’  And I reply, ‘No, for I fly to Christ, who gave himself for my sins.  Satan, you will not prevail against me when you try to terrify me by setting forth the greatness of my sins and try to bring me into heaviness, distrust, despair, hatred, contempt and blasphemy against God.  On the contrary, when you say I am a sinner, you give me armor and weapons against yourself, so that with your own sword I may cut your throat and tread you under my feet, for Christ died for sinners. . . . As often as you object that I am a sinner, so often you remind me of the benefit of Christ my Redeemer, on whose shoulders, and not on mine, lie all my sins.  So when you say I am a sinner, you do not terrify me but comfort me immeasurably.’”
    • Yet, satan still tries to steal our peace. The ultimate hope of the Christian is that final day of judgment when satan is cast into hell for all eternity never to bother us again, never to tempt us again, never to accuse us again. Ultimately, eternally, and finally crushed by Jesus.
  • Under your feet – This does not imply that we will do the crushing by our strength. Rather Jesus does the crushing and our enemy will lay defeated at our feet.
  • The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. – This is more of a statement than a wish or blessing. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ is with you! This is why you have peace with God, by His grace.
