Romans 16:25-26 "Paul’s Gospel?"

Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages 26 but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith—

Video Notes:

  • Typically, we say something like, “the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” meaning the Good News about Jesus Christ as well as the Good News from Jesus Christ. Some have tried to use verses like this and others to claim that Paul changed the message Jesus proclaimed, but that isn’t true. Why does Paul say, “my Gospel” here?
    • There are others who are proclaiming a gospel different from what Paul is teaching.
      • In Galatians, they taught a gospel of grace and works, which is no grace at all.
      • In some of the later epistles we find out some were teaching a gnostic gospel, which claimed that you are saved by secret knowledge and the physical is evil and the spiritual is good, thus the body is evil and the spirit is good.
    • Paul is specifying that we are saved by the Gospel, the Gospel which was explained in detail in the letter to the Romans and which he taught elsewhere. Which also was taught by the other apostles and Jesus Christ, Himself.
      • Paul also asserts that his Gospel is in agreement with the preaching of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the Old Testament Scriptures.
  • We still have this issue today.
    • People still try to change the Gospel, to pervert it. We still see groups indicating that we are saved by grace and works.
    • Gnosticism is still also a thing today both in actual gnostic churches and gnostic teachings creeping into orthodox churches with things like Christian spiritualism, a disregard for the physical in favor of the spiritual, and even permissive hedonistic teachings.
  • We still must cling to the one true Gospel, the Gospel Paul taught, the Gospel the Old Testament pointed to, the Gospel Jesus proclaimed, for it is the power of God for salvation.
