Romans 1:16-17 "The Gospel Is the Power of God for Salvation"

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

Video Notes:

  • This is the theme verse
  • Paul is obligated as Christ’s slave to deliver the Gospel, but that does not bring him shame. It brings him honor.
  • It is the Gospel which is the power of God for salvation for all who believe. This limits salvation to those who believe, but who that salvation is available to is not limited.
  • Righteousness of God is being revealed. How it is being revealed has two concepts behind it. First, God enacts His righteousness through the Gospel. Second, God gives His righteousness by the Gospel.
  • From faith(fulness) for/into faith is most directly related not to revealed (as our word order would indicate), but to the righteousness of God. This is further established by the coming quote.
    • From God’s Faithfulness for our faith (given by God and received by us)
    • God gives His righteousness from His faithfulness and God’s righteousness is received by us through faith.
    • In both cases, God is the giver and we are the receiver.
  • The righteous shall live by faith and the righteous shall live through faith. Paul leaves the meaning ambiguous intentionally and draws from both meanings later in Romans.
