Romans 2:1-5 "You Who Judge Will Be Judged"

Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. 2 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. 3 Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? 5 But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

Video Notes:

  • The language changes from “they” to you. Paul is now addressing the Christians in Rome.
  • Passing judgment refers to condemnation, not judging what is sinful.
  • There are two reasons our passing judgment is wrong. 1. Judgment (salvation vs condemnation) is God’s job alone. 2. We are just as guilty as those whom we judge.
  • We cannot count on the kindness of God while also dismissing God’s kindness towards others.
  • What is God’s kindness in this case? It is His forbearance, the fact that we are not immediately condemned.
  • Why is God kind, being patient with us? To lead us (and others) to repentance.
  • Notice it is God working towards our repentance. We tend to think of repentance as our response to God, but the Bible teaches repentance as something God works in us.
    • Psalm 51:10, Acts 5:31, Acts 11:18
  • So, yes, we can judge what is right and wrong, but we do not judge the salvation or condemnation of others. Rather, we preach law to show sin and Gospel to show God’s salvation in the hopes that the person be brought to repentance. We also pray for that repentance for ourselves.
