Romans 2:6-11 "God Shows No Partiality"

He will render to each one according to his works: 7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; 8 but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. 9 There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. 11 For God shows no partiality.

Video Notes:

  • There is a chiasm here. Vs 6 and 11 talk about God. Vs 7 and 10 speak of people who do good and obey God. Vs 8 and 9 speak of people who do wrong and disobey God.
  • Is this passage saying that we are saved by our works?
  • Romans 1:22-23, 25, 29, 3:19-20
  • This continues the thought of verses 1-5, that no one should judge because we are all guilty. Also, it addresses the common Jewish thought that they would be treated differently.
  • Why first to the Jew and then the Greek (not Jewish)? They had the Law and prophets. Also, judgment begins in the house of the Lord (1 Peter).
  • While God works through certain people and gives certain gifts to individuals or groups of people, like Israel, when it comes to salvation and condemnation, God shows no partiality. This is emphasized by “every”, Jew and Greek, etc.
  • We all will fall short. It’s a tough pill to swallow and should leave us asking, then what hope is there.
