Romans 3:21-26 "Righteousness by Faith"

But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Video Notes:

  • The Jews thought righteousness came through obedience to the Law.
  • Paul has argued that no one can be righteous by the Law because no one perfectly obeys the Law. It seemed hopeless, but now Paul reveals the hope…the only hope and the only hope all along.
  • The Torah and prophets testify to the Gospel of righteousness by faith. Paul says this righteousness apart from the now is now being manifest. That doesn’t mean it’s new, after all, the Torah and prophets testify to it, rather it is now accomplished in Christ and out in the open.
  • This is the Gospel!! “the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.”
  • Once again, it doesn’t matter if you’re a Jew or gentile, all have sinned. You and I have sinned. Your grandma sinned and that mean you have fallen short of living in the glory of God. Romans 1:22-23
  • Justified – This is a legal term. It means to be declared righteous.
  • By His grace (unmerited favor) as a gift (we don’t earn it at all).
  • God is just and must not let the guilty go free. He also isn’t capricious to arbitrarily forgive some and not others. We have a blood-guilt because of our sin. And there is punishment for all sin. When we receive, by faith, the redemption of Christ, His blood is the propitiation (atoning sacrifice) which fulfills the punishment of the blood guilt. Those who have rejected Christ are rejecting the substitution and demanding to satisfy the blood guilt themselves. This is how God is both just and the one who justifies (declare us righteous)
  • What does it mean that God passed over former sins?
  • All of this shows God’s righteousness.
