For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
Video Notes:
The newness of life is one of the “now but not yet” concepts. We have life in Christ now and can walk in it, but we will not walk fully in it until after Christ’s return.
We have been raised in Christ as present in our baptism, but we will be raised at His return with a new incorruptible body, unaffected by sin, like our current body (and current walk) are.
This is the persistent hope of the Christian. When we fall into sin, when we suffer, when we see the effects of sin all around us, we know that there will be an end to all of that. When Christ returns, sin will be no more and neither will the effects of sin.
We can know that we will be raised in the fullness of what that means because we have already been raised and given new life now and because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
We can see in this entire section of chapter 6:1-11 that baptism is not just an outward expression of faith. God is doing amazing things in Baptism. He is crucifying our old self with Christ, burying the old self, freeing us from slavery to sin, raising us to new life in Christ and uniting us with Christ’s resurrection.
