Romans 7:12-13 "God’s Law Is Good"

So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

13 Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure.

Video Notes:

  • Now we get to the direct answer to the question, is the Law sin?
  • The Law is now declared to be completely innocent in regards to the accusation. It is not only good, but righteous, and not only righteous, but holy (of God). (3 attributes reminiscent of “holy, holy, holy, or the Trinity)
    • Holy – of God and demanding conduct obedient to God.
    • Righteous – It makes righteous demands (not unjust) and demonstrate the righteousness of God.
    • Good – It is intended for the benefit of the follower of the Law and those they interact with (all mankind) as well as demonstrates God’s love toward us.
  • So, does the Law bring death? No, only sin brings death.
    • In order that sin might be shown to be sin – sin was unmasked. The person is shown to be a sinner.
    • Might become sinful beyond measure – The sin of the individual is shown to be so great that it can only lead to death. There is no hope in attaining righteousness through the Law. One can only turn to the death of Jesus and His gift of salvation through faith.
    • Illustration of the mechanic before a trip.
  • These passages serve as a hinge between 7:1-11 and 7:14-25
