Romans 8:9-11 "The Spirit of Life"

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

Video Notes:

  • The use of the word, “are”, is meaningful. The world generally says that what you do leads to who you are. The Bible says the opposite, who you are leads to what you do. In your baptism, you were united with Christ. You are in Christ. You also received the Spirit. You are in the Spirit.
    • Those who are in the flesh can only do fleshly things and cannot please God.
    • Those who are in the Spirit of Christ can now walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5)
  • In addition, you belong to God (God, Christ, Spirit all mentioned, all present, you belong to the Triune God).
  • We recognize that the body is still dead because of sin, we still struggle with sin and we still suffer the effects of sin (illness, injury, death, etc.) The body, here, is both the physical and the mental emotional sinful self.
  • However, you are also alive in the Spirit “because of righteousness”. Where sin brings death, righteousness gives life. Our bodies are dead because of our sin, but we are alive in Christ having been declared righteous by having Christ’s righteousness imputed to us. Again, we are sinner and saint at the same time.
  • Notice how, again, this passage brings out that the eternal life you have in Christ has already begun. The Spirit gives life to your mortal bodies.
