Slow Obedience

I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands.” – Psalm 119:60

Is there anything you’ve been meaning to do, but haven’t gotten around to, yet?

About two months ago, I installed a ceiling fan in my bedroom. We’ve had the fan for over a year and the job was on my “to do” list, but I just didn’t get around to it.

That happens sometimes. Perhaps you have experienced it, too. Maybe it’s jobs around the house, or visiting a neighbor, or starting that exercise program. We all have things we know we should do, but just don’t get around to them.

It can happen with God’s commands as well. Maybe we say,

“I’ll quit doing that next week.”

or

“I’ll work on fixing that relationship tomorrow.”

or

“I’ll finally go over and meet my neighbor when things slow down for me.”

Slow Obedience is No Obedience
I know you’ll be shocked to read this, but there were times when I was growing up when I didn’t immediately obey my parents. I wouldn’t clean my room right when they asked or take out the garbage, etc. So, there used to be a phrase said around our house, “Slow obedience is no obedience.”

God gives us His commands for our good, the good of others, and His glory. Our obedience doesn’t affect our salvation or win us any brownie points with God. He already loves us beyond our understanding. However, our timely obedience does benefit us and others and may cause others to glorify the name of God.

What’s something you’ve been meaning to get around to, but have been a bit slow to do?

There’s no time like the present.

Heavenly Father,

Out of Your love, You have given me commands which are good and wise. Help me to obey them and do so without delay. Forgive me where I’ve failed to obey. I also ask that through my obedience, others would come to know Your love and salvation as I have.

Amen.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Kurt
