Tongue Tied

An evil man is trapped by his sinful talk, but a righteous man escapes trouble.” – Proverbs 12:13

Have you ever lied to get out of trouble?

Oh, the ways sin ensnares us. Have you ever done some wrong and been questioned about it?

Maybe you were questioned by a parent or a teacher or even the police. The fear that follows can be overwhelming. Your heart feels like it’s going to beat out of your chest. Then comes the temptation to lie to try to get out of trouble. What then?

Lies That Bind
If you do lie, from then on you have to make sure you keep your story straight lest you be caught in your lie, and then your situation is twice as bad. These kinds of situations have a way of spiraling out of control. The evil person, trapped by his sinful talk.

As they say,

“Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when at first we practice to deceive.”

The Truth Will Set You Free
On the other hand, perhaps you have been falsely suspected of wrong doing. While you may have still have some fear or concern, you also had the truth on your side. You are able to speak the truth plainly and can have peace that you don’t have to worry about tripping up later trying to keep your story straight.

You also know that as people continue to look into the situation, you’re true story will only be corroborated more and more, getting you out of trouble. The righteous person escaping trouble.

Who Is Righteous?
However, we know that none of us our righteous in our actions. We all sin. We all do wrong. However, we know that we now have a righteousness that is from faith, apart from works (Romans 3:21-25).

During our time on earth, we see this lived out by confessing our sin, instead of lying and trying to hide it, once again escaping many troubles!

In eternity, those who say there is no God, are trapped by their sinful talk and face judgment, but those who are made righteous through the blood of the Lamb escape judgment and are brought into eternal life.

So, let us believe in our hearts and confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord!!

Dear Jesus,

Help us to live righteous lives, lives which honor You and bless those around us, that we may know Your peace and speak the truth confidently. When we fail, help us swallow our pride and push aside fear by the power of Your Holy Spirit to speak the truth and confess our sins that we may rest in Your forgiveness and bear witness to Your unceasing grace and forgiveness.

Amen
