Helping Others and Being Helped

Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not.” – Acts 7:25

Have you ever tried to help someone who just wouldn’t be helped?

Many of us have experienced something like this. We try to help someone in a difficult situation, yet they either ignore us or they just get right back into the bad situation again soon after we help them out.

We want to help them, but they either don’t want to be helped or they aren’t willing/able to accept that help in a way that has lasting benefit.

That was Moses’ problem. He wanted to help his people. God sent him to rescue them, but they didn’t accept him. They repeatedly grumbled against Moses whenever things got a little difficult. They had Aaron make them an idol to worship when Moses had been up on a mountain talking to God for what they thought was too long. They wouldn’t listen to Moses tell them the Promised Land would be given over to them. We could go on and on.

The New Moses
Moses prophesied another who could come through Israel who would be like him, but greater. That person would be their mediator between them and God. He would be their rescuer and savior. He came. He was Jesus. They rejected Him, too. Sadly, many still do, today, both Jews and gentiles. Jesus came to help us with our biggest problem. He died on the cross to save us from our sins. He brings salvation and life eternal. His help is free. It’s a gift. Just believe.

Being Helped
Have you been one who would not be helped? Perhaps we all have in some way at some time. We wouldn’t listen to the good advice of a parent or friend. Maybe, we got help, but then fell back into bad habits.

It takes humility and a willingness to listen and change to be helped. We may need to set aside instant gratification for the long-term good. In regards to Jesus, we need to set aside our self-righteousness and simply receive the gift He gives rather than rejecting it. I pray you have. If not, today is a great day to receive His gift.

Next time someone offers to help you, think about how you will respond. Pray about it. Be humble.

Dear Jesus,

You have given the greatest help I needed through Your sacrifice on the cross. Thank you for Your gift. You have also provided other help through the hands and advice of others. Give me wisdom to know what help is good and to humbly accept that help when it’s offered. Help me, then, to freely help others as well.

Amen.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Kurt
