What's in Your Home?

Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction. Regard it as vile and utterly detest it, for it is set apart for destruction.” – Deuteronomy 7:26

What is the strangest thing you have your home?

For me, it might be a picture of a baby my daughter drew. She was trying to draw her brother and it came out pretty creepy looking. It pops up every now and then to freak people out.

In our passage from Deuteronomy, the Israelites were being warned about what they brought into their homes. They were going to be taking over the Promised Land and there were going to be lots of idols, some made out of precious metals. God told them to destroy it all because they are detestable to Him and He knew the danger they held for the people of Israel.

What do you let into your homes…into your lives?

God wants us to be careful about what we bring into our homes and lives as well. He may not give us such a stark command, but He does say,

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” – Philippians 4:8

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.” – James 1:19-21

Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” – 2 Timothy 4:2-4

The things we allow into our homes, our lives, our hearts, and our minds will affect us. They can draw us closer to God or push us away. They can entice us to sin or encourage us to do good. So, it is wise to consider what we have in our homes, what we watch, what things we listen to, etc.

Take a few minutes to reflect on your life and the things in it.

Heavenly Father,

You have blessed me with so much. We live in a society with freedom and wealth. Help me to be wise about what I allow in my life. Forgive me when I have brought sinful things in and draw me to those things which strengthen my faith towards You and love towards my neighbor.
