Welcome

Invocation

Confession and Forgiveness:

P: As we gather, today, let us cleanse our hearts and our consciences by confessing our sin to God.

(Time of silence for reflection and confession)

C: Heavenly Father, we confess that we are sinful and unclean. We have sinned against you and against our neighbor in our thoughts, words, and actions. We are truly sorry for our sins and sincerely repent of them. We ask for Your mercy. For the sake of Jesus Christ’s bitter suffering and death, please forgive us and renew us that we may walk in Your Spirit to the glory of Your holy name. Amen

P: The Lord has heard your confession. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of the Lord, in the stead and by the command of my Lord, Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen

Song of Praise and Thanksgiving –Canvas And Clay

Verse 1:
In my mother’s womb You formed me with Your hands
Known and loved by You Before I took a breath

Pre-Chorus 1:
When I doubt it, Lord, remind me I’m wonderfully made
You’re an artist and a potter I’m the canvas and the clay

Chorus:
You make all things work together For my future and for my good
You make all things work together
For Your glory and for Your name

Verse 2:
There’s a healing light Just beyond the clouds
Though I’ve walked through fire I see clearly now

Pre-Chorus 2:
I know nothing has been wasted No failure or mistake
You’re an artist and a potter I’m the canvas and the clay

Chorus (x2)

Old Testament Reading –Deuteronomy 7:6-10a

“For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations, and repays to their face those who hate him, by destroying them.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle Reading – Galatians 2:17-21

But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading –John 17:14-21

I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.

“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise be to You, o Christ.

Sermon Hymn –Who You Say I Am

Who am I that the highest King Would welcome me
I was lost but He brought me in Oh His love for me
Oh His love for me

Chorus 1:
Who the Son sets free, oh is free indeed
I’m a child of God, yes, I am

Free at last He has ransomed me His grace runs deep
While I was a slave to sin Jesus died for me
Yes He died for me

Chorus 2:
Who the Son sets free, oh is free indeed
I’m a child of God, yes, I am
In my Father’s house, there’s a place for me
I’m a child of God, yes, I am

I am chosen Not forsaken I am who You say I am
You are for me Not against me I am who You say I am

I am who You say I am

Chorus 2

Sermon – “Breaking Down the Barriers to a Deeper Faith-Life “

Week 6: “How I See Myself”

16 Bible Verses to Know:

1. I say (or have said) I am unlovable, but God says I am forever loved.

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).

2. I say (or have said) I am scarred but God says I am healed.

“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

3. I say I am weak, but God says He makes me strong.

“God arms me with strength, and he makes my way perfect” (Psalm 18:32).

4. I recognize I am a sinner, but God says I am forgiven.

“I am writing to you who are God’s children because your sins have been forgiven through Jesus” (1 John 2:12).

5. I was abandoned, but God says I am adopted.

“God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure” (Ephesians 1:5).

6. I say I am broken, but God says He makes me whole.

“So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority” (Colossians 2:10).

7. I have been rejected, but God says I am His!

“Do not fear. I have redeemed you. I have summoned you. You are mine” (Isaiah 43:1).

8. I say I am alone, but God says He is always with me.

“…Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).

9. I say I am hopeless and have no purpose, but God says because of Him, I am hopeful and He gives me purpose.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare, and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11).

10. I say I have failed, but God says I am victorious in Christ.

“But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57).

11. I say I am lost, but God says He gives me direction.

“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying ‘This is the way; walk in it’” (Isaiah 30:21).

12. I say I am worried, anxious, or afraid, but God says with Him I am peace-filled.

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27).

13. I say I am unhappy, but God says I am joyful/joy-filled.

“I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!” (John 15:11)

14. I say I am afraid, but God says I am powerful, loved, and have a sound mind.

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).

15. I say I am nothing special, but God says I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (Psalm 139:14).

16. I say I am worthless, but God says Jesus died because I am worth it.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God
the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers:

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen

Benediction

Closing Song – “Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow”

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow.
Praise Him all creatures here below.
Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts.
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
Amen

Series: Breaking Down the Barriers to a Deeper Faith-Life

Week 6: “Our Time”

Take Home Sheet

In this week’s message, we discussed breaking down the barriers to a deeper faith-life regarding how we see ourselves.

This week, take some time prayerfully reflect on where there may be barriers in how you see yourself.

Ask God to show you where these barriers are and break them down. Below are some questions that may guide you, but feel free to move beyond these questions.

  • How do I feel after I spend time on social media? How do I feel about myself?
  • How do my friends and family make me feel about myself?
  • Do I feel worthless or unlovable?
  • Do I have a high opinion of myself?
  • Do I realize I am a sinner in need of a savior?
  • Do I realize I am forgiven through faith in Jesus?
  • Do I look to my accomplishments or feelings for my self-worth?
  • Do I know what God says about me in the Bible? Do I ponder those things and hold them in high esteem?

If during your prayer time you see that there are some areas where you need to knock down some barriers, take some time during this week to pray and ask God to start to break down the barriers, provide opportunities, and give you wisdom in how to step into those opportunities.
