He Hears You
“I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.” – Psalm 116:1-2
Why do you praise the Lord?
The Bible gives us many reasons to praise God.
- He is our creator.
- He continues to sustain our lives.
- He is holy, righteous, and almighty.
- He cares for us.
- He has forgiven us.
- many more…
What would you add to this list?
For the Psalmist, at least in this particular Psalm, it is because the Lord heard his cry for mercy.
Hearing Is More Than Hearing
We may see the word, hear, and think it means the sound of our voice reverberated off of God’s ear (or whatever the spiritual equivalent is). We may think of a police TV show where the detective goes next door to where a crime was committed and asks, “Did you hear anything last night?”
No, when the Bible says God heard someone it means…
- God noticed the person speaking.
- God paid attention to the one praying / crying out.
- God acted and responded to the person / answered their prayer.
For our Psalmist, God heard his cry for mercy and helped him. God saved him. It looked like the end was near, but restored him. God also heard the cry of the Israelites in Egypt and brought them out. God heard the cry of sinners and sent His Son to save them.
God Hears You
When you are in need, cry out to God. He hears you. He pays attention to what you are saying. He answers you and acts. He hears you when you cry for mercy in confession. He hears you when you cry for mercy in your pain. He hears you when you cry for mercy in your sorrow.
So, call out to Him. Whether now or in the future, if you are suffering call out to Him. Do not be timid. Do not decide you need to handle this yourself. Cry out. He will hear you.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for hearing me. Thank You for saving me. I will praise Your name forevermore because You have heard my cry and answered.
