Perhaps you’ve seen books with titles like these or YouTube videos. They promise to tell you how you can become the super Christian you are meant to be…but is that really what the Bible says we are supposed to be?

Heros of the Bible
The Bible tells us the historical and theological truths from God. All the stories of the “Biblical heroes” actually happened. It can be easy to start to think that these heroic moments are the norm. However, we need to remember two important facts when reading the Bible:

The accounts recorded in the bible take place over thousands of years.
The accounts recorded in the Bible tell of a few people out of the millions (or maybe billions) who lived during that time.

When we read that Sampson had incredible strength and could do mighty deeds, keep in mind that were lots of other people around who weren’t unusually strong or doing mighty deeds. Elijah called down fire from heaven, but this isn’t how the typical Israelite started their campfire or how the normal sacrifice from a priest was consumed.

Most people were ordinary people living ordinary lives and doing ordinary things. They ate and worked and raised their kids. They went to worship, heard the Word of God, and went home. Not only that, but they sinned…a lot.

The David of Bathsheba Rather than Goliath
Not long ago I heard someone make the case that we need to change how we do Sunday School for kids. They talked about how kids grow up thinking these heroes were amazing and that’s what their life should look like. He said that was something he struggled with for years. Then they said,

“I think I would have been better served hearing more about David and Bathsheba than David and Goliath.”

His argument was simple. David was a sinner just like we all are. Maybe we need to talk more about David (and all the people in the Bible) and his many sins and how God still loved him, drew him to repentance, and forgave him. As sinners, that’s the more relatable message and the message we really need to hear, the message of a sinner being saved by a gracious and merciful God.

Jars of Clay
This is the point of 2 Corinthians 4:7. Christians aren’t super-human or sinless. If we were, people might think we were responsible for our own salvation. Rather, we are ordinary and sinful. We are like jars of clay. Nothing special in and of ourselves and easily broken.

What makes us special is what we have inside, Jesus. We have a treasure of immeasurable value that is not from us, but all the work of God so that people (and so we) can see that our salvation and even any “great deeds” we may do are wholly and completely from God.

So, if you look in the mirror and see a plain old pathetic jar of clay, that’s ok. The real treasure you have isn’t how great, beautiful, powerful, or righteous you appear to be. It’s the gift of salvation from a gracious and merciful God who loves you, draws you to repentance, and forgives you.

Heavenly Father,

Keep me ever humble and repentant that the real treasure of Jesus would shine in my life to everyone around me.

The Long Game

“[Zechariah said,] ‘Praise be to the Lord, God of Israel, because he has come and has redeemed his people. He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, as he said through his holy prophets long ago.’” – Luke 1:68-70

Do you have a one-month budget?

Do you have a 1-year plan? How about a 5-year plan? 10?

Most people tend to think short-term. The question that goes through our minds, whether we realize it or not, is,

“How will this action affect me now?”

If something will make us feel good, now, we want to do it.

Some people think a little further out. They may plan a week or a month ahead. Maybe even a year. This allows people to consider other consequences to their actions beyond just the immediate effect. They can even start planning a few steps ahead.

Long-Term Thinking
The best generals, financial planners, and chess players think several moves ahead. They consider their resources, the effects of their actions on themselves, what others might do in response, and how those all move them towards (or away from) their ultimate goal. The question that goes through their mind (and they are fully aware of it) is,

“How will this affect my ability to reach my ultimate goal?”

There are many challenges to long-term thinking. It requires insight, self-honesty, and time. It also requires sacrifice.

You may want something immediately, but need to give that up for the sake of your ultimate goal.

For example:
Let’s say your goal is to become completely debt-free in five years. One day you visit a friend’s house to watch a movie and you are amazed by their 80-inch super high-definition TV and surround sound. It makes your 40-inch TV seem pathetic. You may want to go out and by a new TV and sound system, however, if you want to achieve your debt-free goal, you will need to sacrifice the immediate satisfaction of a new TV so you can meet your ultimate goal.

God Thinks Long-Term
In Zechariah’s prophecy, He points out that Jesus’ coming and God’s plan of salvation, had been foretold long ago and throughout history through the prophets. In fact, God knew exactly when to send Jesus.

“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.” – Romans 5:6

People, throughout the ages, wondered when God would send the Messiah, send His salvation. They wondered why God didn’t act in their specific situation and why God would allow sin.

Today, we still wonder.

Why would God allow this?

When is Jesus returning?

God is still playing the long-game. He’s told us why.

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” – 2 Peter 3:9

It’s not easy. It requires sacrifice. It requires not giving into the desire for immediate gratification. Yet, we know it’s good. We know it’s all done for our salvation.

Heavenly Father,

There are a lot of things I see around me which causes me to wonder why you would allow them. There are also things in my life which I would prefer you remove or would give. Help me to be patient. Help me to trust in Your plan.

Amen.

I Am The Vine

“[Jesus said,] ‘I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.’” – John 15:5,8

What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus?

I was listening to a podcast, today, that was all about spiritual discipline. The question they were addressing is what spiritual discipline is and whether it’s a Biblical concept. In the podcast, they quoted Donald Whitley, the author of Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, who said,

“The only road to Christian maturity and Godliness passes through the practice of the Spiritual Disciplines. “

Is that really true?

A lot has been written on spiritual discipline and many Christians spend a lot of time and effort trying to achieve spiritual maturity through spiritual discipline. You can find hundreds of books written on the subject. They give dozens, even hundreds, of things you can do which they say will cause you to become more godly and mature.

Some you may recognize, such as prayer, reading the Bible, and worship, and others which are less common, such as almsgiving, journaling, watching, silence, simplicity, and more.

Rather than making people more mature in the faith, however, it leads many to become frustrated and less sure of their salvation and others to become prideful about how “godly” they are. Simply put, rather than resting in the grace of God, we look to ourselves and our works for maturity and salvation.

So, what do we do?

Our passage for today keeps it really simple,

“Remain in [Jesus].”

This is one of my favorite descriptions of our life of faith. We are branches. As such, we can only live if we remain in the vine. We can only produce fruit if we remain in the vine. A branch doesn’t will itself to produce fruit. It does so naturally because it is part of the vine.

So, what do we do? We remain in Christ. Don’t cut yourself off from Him. He will give the spiritual water and nutrients we need to live and grow. He does this through His Word and Sacraments (Baptism and the Lord’s Supper). By these means of grace, God strengthens our faith, forgives our sins, and draws us to Him.

It’s all the work of God.

So, we can rest in the grace of Jesus Christ. We can take His yoke upon ourselves for his burden is light.

It’s not that discipline is bad or we shouldn’t do things like reading the Bible and praying. Rather, it’s the difference between thinking we need to do these things to become godly verses thinking we do these things because we get to, we love to, and we know God has given these things to us as a gift, all the while rejoicing in the fact that we have been saved and made holy by God’s work.

Then reading the Bible or praying become a joy rather than a burden and you can rest.

Dear Jesus,

You have grafted me into Yourself, the vine. Keep me firmly attached to You. Feed me with Your supper. Strengthen me by Your Word. Produce Your fruit in my life by the power of Your Spirit and help me to rest in Your grace rather than place myself under the yoke of my own works.

Amen.

An Odd Detail

“Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself.” – John 20:6-7

What is your favorite part of the Resurrection account?

Of all the things described in the Easter account, this is a particularly interesting one. Why not just say that Jesus wasn’t in the tomb or say that all they saw were the burial cloths and shroud (face cloth)? Instead, they describe the scene in great detail that the linens and shroud were folded and laid separately.

So, why is such detail included?

It could be that John is simply trying to really paint the picture of the moment in such a way that people would be able to see it clearly in their mind’s eye. He may want people to be able to “live through that moment” with him. There are a couple of other possible reasons, though.

1. To refute the claim that Jesus’ body was stolen.

The entrance to Jesus’ tomb was blocked by a large stone and guarded by Roman guards. If someone was going to try to steal the body of Jesus, they most likely would have taken the body in its burial clothes. This would save time and be cleaner, both physically and spiritually.

If, for some reason, they took Jesus’ body out of the burial clothes, they would likely have tossed them hastily to the side as they made their escape. With Jesus’ resurrection, His burial linens were still there, as was the face cloth, and they were folded neatly, showing no signs of haste.

2. Because it’s true. It really happened.

Studies have shown that when people lie, they usually include fewer details. This is quite a lot of detail. John also includes some other unnecessary details, like the fact that, as he and Peter raced to the tomb, he got there first.

Did we need to know that? Maybe not. However, it gives that much more detail which is exactly what you would expect when someone is truthfully describing a real event that actually happened.

This detail is just one more part of the account that shows us the miracle of Christ’s resurrection that shows us Jesus really lived, really died, and really rose from the dead as an actual event in history.

It also helps us, as we read the account, to be able to see it even more vividly in our mind, see the empty tomb, and believe; just as the disciples saw the empty tomb and believed.

He is risen!

Heavenly Father,

Open my eyes to see Your Son, who was born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, suffered, died, and was buried, and on the third day, rose again. It is only by Your grace that I believe. Hold me in the faith until the day of Christ’s return.

He Is Risen!!

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,” – 1 Peter 1:3

He is risen!!

Did you just check your calendar? Are you thinking,

“Hold on a second! It’s not Easter!”

Of course, you’re right. It’s not Easter, today. It’s not even the same month. Yet, today we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Today we celebrate the victory of Jesus over death and hell. Today, we celebrate a celebration that will never end.

We celebrate Easter every day!

Christ’s resurrection is just as important today as Easter and every other day. So, yes! Celebrate Jesus being raised from the day, today, too. In fact, did you know it’s because Jesus rose on a Sunday that we gather for worship on Sundays instead of Saturdays?

It’s a reminder and celebration every week.

Why wouldn’t we celebrate every day? We didn’t deserve our salvation. Quite the opposite, we deserved eternal punishment for our sins, but our God is merciful and gracious, not willing that anyone should perish. According to that great mercy, we now, by faith in Jesus, may be born again…given new life.

Jesus is our hope and our hope is living. He was raised from the dead so we, too, can be raised to eternal life. So, let us celebrate today and every day after, blessing the God who loved us so much and has given us new life in the risen savior.

He is risen!!
He is risen, indeed!!
Hallelujah!!!

Dear Jesus,

Thank You for dying and rising again for my and all people’s salvation. May I celebrate Your victory over sin, death, the devil, and hell every day of my life.

You Are Free, But How Will You Use Your Freedom?

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” – Galatians 5:13

How do you choose between doing the right thing or not?

This is a big issue in the church. The Bible teaches us that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ and this is a gift. It’s not by our works so no one can boast. In other words, we are free from being under the Law of God and live in the freedom of God’s grace.

This, however, is scary to a lot of people. What will these saints who are also sinners do with this freedom? Will they choose to do the right thing if there is no threat of punishment? In fact, many churches descend into legalism out of fear that without the threat of the Law, people will just sin more and more.

Fear is a terrible motivator
The idea that we can get Christians to live right if we just put the fear of God into them is both wrong and wrong-headed.

We’re still sinners. It’s wrong because even the greatest saint among us sins daily…a lot. Think of Israel. They lived under the Law and they definitely didn’t perfectly follow that Law, not even close.
It leads to fear or pride. We all sin. So, when someone is being told to live under the Law, they cope with their sin either by constantly living in fear and defeat (which eventually leads to them quitting) or they minimize their sin and become prideful of how well they are doing (which leads them away from repentance).
Love is a much better motivator. Which would you describe as the better marriage, one where each person tries to do everything perfectly for their spouse because they are afraid of what their spouse will do if they mess something up or one where each person tries to serve the other with joy because they love their spouse and know they are loved by their spouse?
The Bible leads with love. The Bible says we are freed from Law and saved by grace.

In Romans 6, Paul asks the rhetorical question. At the end of Romans 5, it says,

“The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” – Romans 5:20-21

So, Romans 6 starts with the question,

“What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?” – Romans 6:1

The answer is, “no,” but the reason is what’s really interesting. Paul doesn’t return to the Law and say we must all follow it because God said so. Rather, he grounds the answer in the Gospel and who we are in Christ. We have died to sin and been raised to new life in Christ. So, live that new life!

It can be a scary place to stand, but it’s the right place. We have been made free through the Gospel and our salvation is solely by grace through faith apart from our works.

How will we use that freedom?

God’s Word bases the response in the Gospel. This leads to love and gratitude rather than fear or pride. Will we always chose the right path? No. We are still sinners. However, However, rather than being terrified of God or minimizing our sin, the Gospel allows us to recognize our sin and live a life of repentance knowing that our forgiveness and life are found solely in Jesus.

Heavenly Father,

You have given me freedom, but I have not always used it to follow Your ways. Please forgive me and help me to live for You and for that choice to be made from a grateful heart for the love and grace You have shown me and continue to show me every day.

John 20:1–18

Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
