One King to Rule Them All

One King to Rule Them All

And the Lord will be king over all the earth. On that day the Lord will be one and his name one.” – Zechariah 14:9

We live in a pluralistic society. There are many beliefs about many different things, from the inconsequential to the very consequential.

  • Who has the best pizza?
  • What football team is the best (if they ever play again)?
  • Should we have open or closed borders?
  • Should I spoil the child or discipline him?
  • Who is God?

Of course, it’s that last one that is most important. You can do alright in life eating pizza that isn’t the best and there are a lot of people who root for the Lions and do just fine. Political questions, questions about parenting, and others will affect people’s lives, but only temporarily.

What you believe about God has eternal effects.

There is only one Lord, the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is only the name of Jesus that we are saved. If we get this wrong, we have missed the most important question. If we get it right, the reward is eternal life in Heaven.

No Battle to the End:
Our passage makes the claim clearly. In the end, there is only one Lord. There is only one name. However, the reality is, there is only one name, today, too. This isn’t some supernatural battle to see who will come out on top. There has always only been one God. He was God in the beginning. He is God, today. He will be God forever.

This is the one in whom you place your trust. The one who is God over all, Lord of lords and King of kings. You can trust Him with eternity and you can trust Him with today.

Lord of All,

You created everything that is and sustain all of creation. Your rule is just and loving. You have shown mercy on many, including me. You are Lord of all and You are my Lord.

Amen.

In Christ’s Service,
