What Your Car’s A/C Has To Do With Your Soul

What Your Car’s A/C Has To Do With Your Soul

The other day I was driving around with my daughter in the car. At one point, we started smelling some foul. My daughter said, “Ugh! Gross! Roll down the windows!” She did and the smell got worse.

You see, we had the A/C on, but it wasn’t set to use recycled air. I explained it wasn’t going to help to roll the windows down because the smell was coming from outside. In fact, it was making things worse. She discovered very quickly that the air the car used for the A/C made a big impact on what we were breathing … and smelling.

The Bible tells us something similar:

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” – Matthew 6:22-23

What God is telling us in this passage is that it matters what you take in, what you consume. If you watch racist, hate-filled Youtube videos, you are likely to start having those hateful thoughts and, eventually, your words and actions will follow. If you watch sexually charged movies or read sexually charged books, that can lead to lust and even the acting out of those thoughts.

The list could go on: violence, greed, disrespecting parents, coveting, fear and worry, and on and on.

Alternatively, if you are listening to music that is focused on Jesus, that can focus your mind on Jesus. If you watch shows that engage in modesty, lust won’t be inflamed. If you watch videos that promote love and understanding, your thoughts and actions will move in that direction.

This is particularly true of the Bible. God tells us in Hebrews 4:12

“For the word of God is alive and active.”

In Romans 12:2 we are told,

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

As we spend time in God’s Word, God changes us. He re-orients us. He renews our minds making us more likely to “walk with the Spirit” and less likely to “indulge the flesh” (see Galatians 5:13-25) This is one reason it’s so important to spend time reading the Bible every day.

What a wonderful gift God has given us in His Word. It tells us about God. It draws us to Him. It changes us and renews our mind. Amen!

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for giving us Your Word. Help us to want to read Your Word every day. May Your Spirit work in us as we read it.

Amen

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Kurt
