Romans 8:29-30 “What Is Predestination?”

Romans 8:29-30 "What Is Predestination?"
For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
Video Notes:
- This further explains what is meant by working good for those who were called according to God’s purpose. It tells us both who this is and what the ultimate goal of the “working good” is.
- There are five verbs and all are connected by also so they cannot be separated. It’s all one continuous action and purpose.
- Foreknew (knew beforehand)
- At times, when used in conjunction with people as the subject, this can mean “to be aware of beforehand.”
- However, the Bible often uses the word, “know”, in a deeper, more intimate, relational way.
- It is this relational concept that is in mind here.
- God is omniscient and is aware of all things before they happen, so there’s no need to include that in the sequence unless it somehow then refers to some aspect of the person that distinguishes them from God having been aware of everyone else beforehand. People have often tried to take that leap here.
- God was aware of who would be worthy of salvation.
- God was aware of who would believe.
- Neither of these are actually expressed in the text here. Additionally, the concepts put the cart before the horse and they go against the passivity we see on man’s part in every aspect of salvation.
- God entered into a relationship with us before we did anything.
- Predestined (appointed beforehand)
- For God, love is an action. Having entered into the relationship with us, God then appoints us to be conformed to the image of His Son. The relationship and the appointment go hand in hand and happen together beforehand.
- Ephesians 1:3-6
- “Beforehand” – This happened before the foundations of the world, before creation. God chose us (entered into a relationship with us) and appointed us.
- We also see “to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers,” echoed here. We are “in Christ”, “holy and blameless” like Christ, and we are “adopted through Christ”, making us brothers and sisters with Christ.
- The firstborn reference also points to Christ’s resurrected form and the resurrection and new body we will also receive.
- Ephesians 1:3-6
- For God, love is an action. Having entered into the relationship with us, God then appoints us to be conformed to the image of His Son. The relationship and the appointment go hand in hand and happen together beforehand.
- Called
- Here we shift in time from beforehand to what has happened to us in time in our lives.
- God calls us by His Word.
- This can be resisted (Acts 7:51, John 3:18, Matthew 10:14, Matthew 23:37)
- Justified (declared righteous)
- God has made you righteous not by anything you have done. His pronouncement makes it so.
- This has already been done at your baptism.
- Glorified
- Heaven, no more suffering, no more sin, etc.
- New immortal bodies
- The new life and righteousness you already have and being reconciled to God.
- Isn’t this in the future, why in past tense? This has already been accomplished, even though we don’t experience it yet.
- We need to recognize a few other things in regards to election and predestination.
- Election and Predestination are always spoken of in these kinds of praise-statements. They are always related to salvation and never condemnation.
- Election and Predestination are always spoken of in concrete, personal, historical, and knowable ways, not as an intellectual concept.
- Election and predestination are spoken of for your benefit and assurance, not for doubt.

Romans 8:28 “All Things Work for Good?”

Romans 8:28 "All Things Work for Good?"
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Video Notes:
- Keep in mind this is preceded by all the groaning and suffering caused by sin in the world.
- This time Romans uses the imperative rather than the passive that has been used regarding every aspect of our salvation.
- What does “for those who love God” mean? All who have been called by God and responded with love for Him, a qualification met by all who have been called
- Those who love God are those who have been called by God.
- 1 John 4:19
- These are the people this passage is talking to.
- All things?
- Genesis 50:20
- This isn’t just physical or financial things, though it can include those things. (Psalm 145:15-16, James 1:17). However, the ultimate focus is our freedom and glorification (vs 30).
- Sometimes lacking in the physical or financial benefits us by strengthening our faith. Suffering produces endurance.
- This isn’t saying that all things ARE good or that all things are from God. There is evil. There are bad things, but God works even those things for good.
- While the “those who love God” was descriptive of an action people take, we finish with the passive concepts that we have been called according to God’s purpose.
- God purpose is salvation.

Romans 8:26-27 “Is Romans 8 Talking About Prayer Languages?”

Romans 8:26-27 "Is Romans 8 Talking About Prayer Languages?"
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because[a] the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
Video Notes:
- Notice it’s the Spirit groaning, not us. There’s no indication that the person is speaking in this groan/language at all or that the Spirit is groaning through the person.
- Mark 16:15-18
- Not in the earliest manuscripts.
- No reason to think this is anything different than tongues in Acts.
- Matthew 6:6 – Don’t pray to get attention and impress people. (actually, this is similar to the tongues issue in 1 Corinthians where people were lifting themselves up with the gift and Paul tells them to stop.)
- Acts 2:6-8 – First instance of speaking in tongues. It was the apostles speaking in known languages that they did not know.
- 1 Corinthians 12:1-4, 10
- So, there’s the gift of speaking in an language you don’t know and there’s a gift of interpreting a language you don’t know.
- 1 Corinthians 14:1-17
- Corinth was a trade hub and would have had people from many nations who spoke different languages.
- Vs 1-5 – What are the mysteries? It’s that no one understands except God…this is not good. This is still a real human language, but no one in the room understands it.
- The one who speaks in tongues builds himself up (edifies himself) – This is not being spoken of as a good thing.
- Vs 6-12 – It becomes even more obvious that 1 Corinthians 14 is talking about speaking real human languages.
- Vs 13-19 – Still the same concept of tongues. This is being rebuked, not praised, both on a personal level and a congregational level.
- It also speaks of praying in tongues, but there’s no reason to think this is different from the speaking in tongues except that speaking that was happening was a prayer.
- Vs 20-25 – Still the same concept of tongues.
- It’s not a sign for believers (This speaks against the teaching that speaking or praying in non-human tongues is a sign of receiving the Holy Spirit)
- It’s a sign for non-believers, but if no one is interpreting, visitors will think you’re crazy!
- I Corinthians specifically says they shouldn’t speak in a tongue unless it is interpreted as that is only self-gratifying.
- Acts and Mark both use the word glossais (glossa). In 1 Corinthians glosson is used but that’s a matter of grammar, describing that people were given and, thus, possess (genitive) the gift of tongues vs a description of what the people were doing (Acts), thus the indirect object (dative) of a verb. In both cases it’s morphological changes of glossa. It would be strange to use the same word to describe two completely different gifts from the Holy Spirit.
- 1 Corinthians 13:1 (1-3) – Not a prescription and not even a description. This is an intentional exaggeration to make a point, you need love.
- In the Spirit
- Ephesians 6:18 (armor, 18-20)
- Jude 20 (17-21)
- Other uses…
- Matthew 22:43
- Acts 18:25
- Act 20:22
- Rom 2:29
- Rom 8:9
- Gal 5:25
- Eph 3:5
- Col 1:7a-8
- 1 Pet 4:6

Romans 8:27 “The Spirit Intercedes for Us”

Romans 8:27 "The Spirit Intercedes for Us"
And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
Video Notes:
- In our last video, we talked about how we are weak. We are weak due to sin as well as our limits in knowledge, faith, wisdom, and knowing the will of God. We are so weak that we don’t what to pray for, how to pray for it, what resolution to pray for and more.
- Thankfully, the Spirit helps us in our weakness by interceding for us in prayer. He knows what we should pray for and how to pray for it. He knows the will of the Father and knows the Father intimately.
- 1 Corinthians 2:10 – The Spirit searches the depth of God.
- The Spirit know us better than we know ourselves. He knows what we need to be praying for, whether for ourselves or for others.
- Have you ever felt like you weren’t sure what to pray? We don’t, but the Spirit does! Do you ever wonder if you are using the right words? Don’t worry, the Spirit is coming alongside you and praying the right words. Do you wonder what result to pray for? The Spirit knows and is interceding for us always in accord with the Father’s will. And He is pleading on your behalf! This gives us great assurance!
- This also should give us great humility. We pray “not my will but thine be done.”
- This should also cause us to realize the foolishness of the “name it and claim it” movement.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Kurt
Romans 8:26 “The Spirit Helps Us in Our Weakness”

Romans 8:26 "The Spirit Helps Us in Our Weakness"
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
Video Notes:
- The whole of creation is groaning and we are groaning, waiting for Christ’s return and the renewal of all creation. For now, we wait in our weakness.
- What is our weakness? We are sinners? Sure, but more than that. We don’t know the future, we don’t know God’s will, we aren’t all that wise. As the verse says, we don’t even know what to pray for, let alone what should be done about it or what outcome to pray for.
- What is the solution? The Holy Spirit. He helps us in our weakness. In this case, He intercedes for us before the Father. We’ll talk more about that intercession tomorrow when we look at vs 27. Today, I want to focus on that concept of the Spirit helping us in our weakness.
- The language used here gives the image of someone walking alongside you helping you to carry your burdens, helping you to walk.
- In this case, He intercedes for us in prayer. However, the other passages in the Bible indicate other ways the Spirit helps us in our weakness.
- John 15:26 – He testifies to us about Jesus.
- John 16:8 – He convicts us of sin.
- John 16:13 – He guides us into all truth.
- 2 Timothy 1:7 – Gives power, love, self-discipline, and helps us to witness.
- Ephesians 1:17 – Gives us wisdom.
- Notice, once again, our utter reliance on God. We don’t become powerhouses faith, we are reliant on the Spirit. The growth that we experience is to learn to rely more and more on the Spirit.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Kurt

Opening Song: How Great Is Our God
The splendor of a King, clothed in majesty
Let all the earth rejoice, all the earth rejoice
He wraps himself in light, and darkness tries to hide
And trembles at His voice, trembles at His voice
Chorus:
How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God all will see
How great, how great is our God
Age to age He stands, and time is in His hands
Beginning and the end, beginning at the end
The Godhead, three in one, Father, Spirit, Son
The Lion and the Lamb, the Lion and the Lamb.
(Chorus)
Bridge:
Name above all names, Worthy of all praise,
My heart will sing How great is our God

Invocation
Confession and Forgiveness:
P: Come into the presence of the Lord our God.
C: Have mercy, O Lord. If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand; but if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
(A time of silence to reflect and personally confess our sins)
P: I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin. Let us confess our sin before the Lord. Let us confess together.
C: Heavenly Father, we confess that we are sinners. We have sinned against you and our neighbors. We have not loved you with our whole heart and we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
P: The Lord is gracious and merciful. He promises to forgive our sins. Therefore, upon this, your confession, as a called and ordained servant of the Lord, in the stead and by the command of my Lord, Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
Song of Praise and Thanksgiving – Lord, I Need You
Lord I come, I confess. Bowing here I find my rest
Without You, I fall apart. You’re the one that guides my heart
Chorus:
Lord, I need You, oh I need You. Every hour I need You
My one defense, my righteousness, Oh God, how I need You
Where sin runs deep, Your grace is more.
Where grace is found is where You are
And where You are Lord I am free. Holiness is Christ in me
Chorus:
Lord, I need You, oh I need You. Every hour I need You
My one defense, my righteousness, Oh God, how I need You
So teach my song to rise to You When temptation comes my way
And when I cannot stand I’ll fall on You.
Jesus You’re my hope and stay
Chorus:
Lord, I need You, oh I need You. Every hour I need You
My one defense, my righteousness, Oh God, how I need You
My one defense, my righteousness, Oh God, how I need You
My one defense, my righteousness, Oh God, how I need You

Old Testament Reading – Isaiah 44:6–8
Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel
and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:
“I am the first and I am the last;
besides me there is no god.
Who is like me? Let him proclaim it.
Let him declare and set it before me,
since I appointed an ancient people.
Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen.
Fear not, nor be afraid;
have I not told you from of old and declared it?
And you are my witnesses!
Is there a God besides me?
There is no Rock; I know not any.”
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
Epistle Reading – Romans 8:18-27
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
Gospel Reading – Matthew 13:24–30, 36–43
He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’ He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, “Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”…
…Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.” He answered, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.
P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise be to You, o Christ.

Sermon Hymn – Who You Say I Am
Who am I that the highest King would welcome me?
I was lost but He brought me in. Oh, His love for me.
Oh, His love for me.
Chorus 1:
Who the Son sets free, Oh is free indeed.
I’m a child of God, Yes I am.
Free at last He has ransomed me. His grace runs deep.
While I was a slave to sin Jesus died for me. Yes, He died for me.
Chorus 2:
Who the Son sets free, oh is free indeed.
I’m a child of God, Yes I am.
In my Father’s house there’s a place for me.
I’m a child of God, Yes I am.
I am chosen, not forsaken. I am who You say I am
You are for me, not against me. I am who You say I am
I am chosen, not forsaken. I am who You say I am
You are for me, not against me. I am who You say I am
I am who You say I am
Chorus 2:
Who the Son sets free, oh is free indeed.
I’m a child of God, Yes I am.
In my Father’s house there’s a place for me.
I’m a child of God, Yes I am.

Sermon – “What is SO is more than we SEE”
Prayer of the Church
Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God
the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen

Romans 8:18 “This Is Nothing Compared to What Is to Come”

Romans 8:18 "This Is Nothing Compared to What Is to Come"
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
Video Notes:
- Consider or Count – accounting term. In this case, it’s saying that whatever negatives we experience in our mortal life are not only not equal to the positive that is to come, but can’t really be compared. To put it in accounting terms, it’s like there’s a 1 cent cost to receive $100 billion dollars.
- The passage acknowledges the suffering we endure. This includes both the suffering we do for Christ (vs 17) and the suffering of living in a sin-corrupted world, things like illness, death, mourning, war, etc.
- This is one of the things people can struggle with. How can a loving God allow such suffering? This passage doesn’t try to answer the question, but rather puts the suffering into perspective. While it seems great to us now, we will see after Christ returns that it didn’t come close to comparing to the glory of eternal life with God.
- But what of the question? I think it’s important to note that God will end the suffering one day. That is the day of His return. There will be no more suffering, death, mourning, etc. because there will be no more sin.
- Sin is the cause of the suffering experience, whether it’s our sin, the sin of others, or effects of decay and death of sin in general. God will remove all sin and its effects when Jesus returns. He is not slow to act as some consider slowness, but rather is patient not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)
- So, until that day of Christ’s return, we wait in hope of the glory that is to come.
- Romans 8:18-27 – If you are in the Wesley Chapel area, I invite you to come to Faith tomorrow for worship. We meet at 11am.
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. Romans 8:17 “Heirs with Christ”

Romans 8:17 "Heirs with Christ"
and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Video Notes:
- One of the consequences of being adopted as sons and daughters in Christ is that we are now heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.
- Galatians 3:16-18, 29. We are heirs because we are in and with Christ, we belong to Christ; who is the one offspring and heir of Abraham. We become heirs with Christ through the promise, not the Law.
- We are heirs not just of the promise of Abraham, but “of God”, meaning all that God has to give and share.
- If you remember from yesterday’s video on Romans 8:16, the Holy Spirit bears witness or testifies that we are children of God. That same Spirit of God is also the guarantee, or deposit, of our inheritance until we receive the inheritance in full at Christ’s return. (Ephesians 1:13-14)
- The passage ends talking about suffering but looking to the glory of Christ’s return.
- Suffering is part of the deal. We are in Christ, the world hates Jesus and it hates all those who are with Him and belong to Him.
- Glorification is also part of the deal.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Kurt
Romans 8:16 “The Holy Spirit Testifies for You”

Romans 8:16 "The Holy Spirit Testifies for You"
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
Video Notes:
- Romans 8 has established that through our baptism, we are made adopted children of God.
- Romans 8 has also established that all who believe in Jesus have the Holy Spirit in them.
- Now, we see one of the things the Spirit is doing for us. (He does many things.) He testifies, or bears witness, that we are, indeed, children of God.
- The Holy Spirit doesn’t bear witness alone, but along with your spirit. This brings to mind the rule of two witnesses to confirm truth (Deuteronomy 17:6 and John 8:17-18)
- It’s unclear who the Holy Spirit and our spirit are bearing witness to.
- It is in this two-fold witness, the Holy Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we once again are assured of the truth that we have been adopted as children of God.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Kurt
