Romans 5:16-19 “Why Jesus is the Only Way”

Romans 5:16-19 "Why Jesus is the Only Way"
But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. 17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
Video Notes:
- Paul has been talking about Adam and Jesus. Jesus is the second Adam. Where Adam was the first man of creation and Jesus the first man of the new creation. However, the comparison only goes so far, because Adam brought sin, death, and condemnation, but Jesus brings righteousness, life, and salvation. Jesus is the mirror image of Adam in that way, but He is the greater one as His gift overcomes Adam’s curse.
- The righteousness that comes through Jesus comes as a gift, but the death that comes through Adam comes as a wage of sin.
- Notice in this how the question of “why is salvation only found in Jesus?” is answered. Only Jesus was without sin. Only Jesus overcame death. Only Jesus died for our sin, taking our death and condemnation, and exchanges that to give us His righteousness and life, thus saving us.
- Paul’s early arguments in chapters 1-4 also answer the question. All religions apart from Christianity are works-based. You earn your salvation. Yet, chapters 1-4 of Romans make it clear that no one is saved by their works. So, all other religions fail to save. They are not all the same. Salvation is only by grace through faith in Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone.
