Romans 5:16-19 "Why Jesus is the Only Way"

But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. 17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.

Video Notes:

Paul has been talking about Adam and Jesus. Jesus is the second Adam. Where Adam was the first man of creation and Jesus the first man of the new creation. However, the comparison only goes so far, because Adam brought sin, death, and condemnation, but Jesus brings righteousness, life, and salvation. Jesus is the mirror image of Adam in that way, but He is the greater one as His gift overcomes Adam’s curse.
The righteousness that comes through Jesus comes as a gift, but the death that comes through Adam comes as a wage of sin.
Notice in this how the question of “why is salvation only found in Jesus?” is answered. Only Jesus was without sin. Only Jesus overcame death. Only Jesus died for our sin, taking our death and condemnation, and exchanges that to give us His righteousness and life, thus saving us.
Paul’s early arguments in chapters 1-4 also answer the question. All religions apart from Christianity are works-based. You earn your salvation. Yet, chapters 1-4 of Romans make it clear that no one is saved by their works. So, all other religions fail to save. They are not all the same. Salvation is only by grace through faith in Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone.

Confession and Forgiveness:

P: Our Heavenly Father asks us to come into His presence.
C: But we are sinful and unworthy.

P: Yes, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, but Jesus Christ died on the cross that we may be forgiven and washed clean of all our sins by His blood spilled on the cross.
C: Lord, if You wash us, we will certainly be clean and pure.

P: We take a moment to bow before the His cross and silently reflect on our lives and confess our sins.

P: Let us confess, together, our sins to God our Father.

Old Testament Reading – Exodus 19:2-8

Romans 5:6-15

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die — but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned — for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.

Video Notes:

Sin came into the world through Adam (the Fall) and the wages of sin is death. Since sin (sinful nature) was then passed down from generation to generation making all people sinners, death also came to all people. It’s important to note that sin is singular, referring to the sinful nature and the force of sin, not individual sins we commit as a result of that sinful nature. The individual resultant sins are spoken of at the end of verse 12 when it says, “because all sinned.”
So, sin enters the world through Adam and death through Adams sin. Because of this, Adam’s new sinful nature is passed on to all his descendants. We then also sin and thus death continues to reign.
Paul the pauses the thought and adds a parenthesis statement to explain some things. He’ll come back to his thought in verse 15 which we will discuss in the service on Sunday and verses 17 and 18 which we’ll talk about on Monday.
Sin was in the world before the Law was given to Moses. Sin entered through Adam. However, since people didn’t have the Law, the sin isn’t considered a “transgression”, i.e. people weren’t intentionally violating (transgressing) and known Law.
Sin is still sin, though, and death is still the wage of sin.
Death reigned – Notice how sin and death are spoken of as powers that rule inescapably over man. There is only one who could break that reign, the one who was to come and who has all authority in heaven and on earth, Jesus Christ.
We struggle with the idea of many being affected by the one. We, in America, are very individualistic, but other cultures around the world understand the idea of corporate effects like one person’s actions bringing shame or dishonor on their whole family or village.
Perhaps it’s helpful to think of sin like a genetic disease that is inherited from one generation to the next, but rulership is really the more accurate way to think of it. Adam was given dominion over all the earth. He was man’s ruling representative. When that ruler sinned, it effected his whole kingdom. If a ruler goes to war, the whole kingdom goes to war. We shouldn’t forget, though, that we all sin, too, and are just as guilty as Adam. Adam may have declared war, but we all volunteered to be in the army to continue to fight that war. Thankfully, just like a ruler can place the entire kingdom at war, If a ruler brings peace, the whole kingdom lives in peace. Adam brought war, but Jesus brings peace.

Romans 5:3-5 “Our Hope Will Not Put Us to Shame”

Romans 5:3-5 "Our Hope Will Not Put Us to Shame"

Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Suffering – Any external pressure
Not only does suffering not overthrow the reality of God’s blessings, they are an occasion for rejoicing.
This doesn’t mean the suffering, itself, is good or that we are rejoicing THAT we are suffering. Rather, we continue to rejoice in the blessings God has given and continues to give even when suffering. The suffering doesn’t mean God has abandoned us.
Notice the circular nature of what is happening. We stand in God’s gracious presence and boast in the sure hope of the glory of God in vs 2. Then we suffer (experience pressure trying to knock us down). God sustains us in that suffering to produce perseverance (so we endure), which gives/reveals tested character. Then we end up right where we started…with sure hope.
- There is maturing that happens in this process, but not to new stages of faith or Christian living. We don’t “level up” like in a video game. Rather we mature in faith, hope, and endurance God has worked in us. And continue to have sure hope in Christ.
Finally, this hope does not put us to shame because the object of the hope (Jesus) is faithful and has and continues to pour out His love into our hearts where it continues to abide through the Holy Spirit who has been given.
- This is all passive again. God’s love was poured into us. The Spirit was given to us. The Spirit continues to pour God’s love into us. This passage isn’t about telling you to endure in suffering so you receive God’s blessings and/or salvation. This is encouraging you by telling you what God has and continues to do, that the hope you have in Him is sure even in suffering.
One more note of interest…The language of God’s love being POURED out the Holy Spirit given is a reference to baptism, though this passage is not solely a reference to baptism. (Titus 3:5-6)

Romans 5:1-2 "Peace and Grace Through Jesus"

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.

Video Notes:

Justification – Declared righteous
Peace – This is an objective reality (not at war, having completeness, a restored relationship) not a subjective feeling.
Grace – Undeserved favor of God
The use of “Lord” gives the image of royalty. We are now at peace with the king and are stood in His gracious presence having been declared righteous by God. This righteousness and peace were received by faith in Jesus
This being the case, we now boast (rejoice) in the sure hope (not just expectation, but sure trust) of having been fully restored experience of God’s image and presence that is to come.
This is a beautiful, succinct statement of the Lutheran doctrine of justification where we (and others) stand in opposition to needing to add anything, any works of our own, to God’s work of justifying us. The language in this statement is passive in regards to us. We are justified, God established peace with us, God stood us in His gracious presence, and God is our sure hope. This is all a gift received by faith.

The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, 24 but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.” 19 He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. 20 No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21 fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. 22 That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.”

Video Notes:

“Count” – Reckon – Used both in vs3, vs 8, vs 9, and vs 10. This is an accounting term which in this case means credited or placed into ones account which did not inherently belong to the person.
So, even though he and Sarah’s body left them with no hope of a child, they have hope because they trust God will fulfill His promise.
Vs 17 – “God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.” – God can make Abraham’s dead (old) body and Sarah’s dead (barren) womb alive again and God can call into existence Abraham being the father of many nations though no heir currently exists.
Did Abraham sin during the 25 years he waited for Isaac? Yes. Immediately, he laughed in doubt. In fact, though Abraham believed God’s promise when it was made and trusted that God could do it even with his 75 yr old body and Sarah’s 65 yr old barren body, after 10 years of waiting, and under the temptation from Sarah, he sinned with Hagar who bore Ishmael. Yet even in this doubt and
Abraham did doubt (laughed) and did try to do it his own way at one point, but he never wavered into unbelief. So, God grew him (it’s passive) in his faith as He gave glory to God (opposite of Romans 1).
So, Abraham’s faith was counted to him as righteousness. This again is passive. God promised. God strengthened and God credited faith as righteousness. Abraham believed and it was put into his account as righteousness.

That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, 17 as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. 18 In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.”

Video Notes:

The immediate referent is God calling Abraham as father of many nations into existence, though he had no offspring. However, the text has a wider application.
Creation ex nihilo (out of nothing) – (Genesis 1, Hebrews 11:3, Psalm 33:6–9, Colossians 1:16, John 1:3-4)
Story of the boastful scientist.
Our spiritual life – (1 Corinthians 4:7, John 3:27, Psalm 36:9, John 7:38)
He called creation into existence. He called Abraham’s offspring into existence. He called faith into existence in our hearts and he calls the spiritually dead to life. This is the power of God’s Word!
Why should we doubt or disbelieve anything that comes from the mouth of the God who literally speaks things into existence? This is the greatest assurance! This isn’t like us, limited people who, when we make promises, are planning, hoping, or maybe even lying. Even with our best intentions, we aren’t immortal and almighty. Things happen that prevent us from keeping our promises. This is not how it is with God. All His promised are true because the calls all things into existence makes them true by speaking them.

Confession and Forgiveness:

P: When we come into the presence of God we cannot help but see our sinfulness. God does not require us to cleanse our own sin and be perfect of our own power for, surely, we could never achieve this. Instead, He tells us to come as we are and receive His great mercy.

Come out of sadness, from wherever you’ve been.

Sermon – “The Promise Received By Faith”

Romans 4:13-25

For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression.

That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.” He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.” But the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.

Romans 4:9-12 "God’s Grace Is For All People"

Is this blessing then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness. 10 How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised. 11 He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well, 12 and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

Video Notes:

Circumcision was the mark all Jewish men were given as a baby to indicate they were one of God’s chosen people.
There were people in the church who were Jewish who thought that salvation was for the Jews only. They insisted that the gentiles who became Christian didn’t just have to believe in Jesus, they had to become Jewish and live by the Jewish rules. This included that the men had to be circumcised.
This passage is arguing that God’s gift of salvation is for all people, Jews and gentiles.
Abraham had faith, and that was credited to him as righteousness. He was not circumcised until later and that was not credited to him as righteousness. So, circumcision, in the end, while required by God, was of no value for righteousness because what was really needed was not the outward sign of circumcision, but faith.
Sometimes church’s today demand outward signs. Whether circumcision or the outward signs church’s demand today, it does nothing before God.
