Waiting…
Waiting...
“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.” – Titus 2:11-14
Jesus came and died for us.
Yeah!
He’s coming again.
Yeah!
So, what do we do in the meantime?
According to Titus 2:11-14, we renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope. We could also add the Great Commission to make disciples of all people. These two things aren’t separate, though. It’s impossible to make disciples, baptizing and teaching all that God has commanded while living a godless life. Living a self-controlled, upright, and godly life is part of our witness.
“But it’s so hard, pastor!”
Thankfully, God doesn’t leave it just to us to do. Christ’s appearance and salvation “train[s] us to do it. Moreover, Jesus sends us His Spirit who wills and works this within us.
“for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” – Philippians 2:13
“Yet, I still struggle with sin, pastor!”
Yes, so do I. Paul addresses that in Romans 7.
“So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.” – Romans 7:21-23
Paul wants to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and live a self-controlled, upright, and godly life, but he keeps finding himself doing the opposite because his sinful nature still lives within Him.
So, where does that leave us?
It leaves us back where we started, Christ’s appearing and bringing salvation. We try to follow God’s will and commands and pray for Him to work in our lives. When we do, we praise the Lord for what He is doing in our lives. When we fall, we are reminded that our sinful nature is still at work in our bodies and we, once again, fall before the cross in repentance. However, we do not despair. Though it, at times, seems hopeless, it never is because our hope is always in Christ, alone…or as Paul sums up Romans 7…
“Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!“
Heavenly Father,
As I await Jesus’ return, work in my life to will and to do good works for Your purposes. When I fail, lead me back to the cross and remind me that whether I do good works or give in to sin, my hope is always in Jesus Christ, alone.
Amen.

Pastor Kurt

Let’s Just Calm Down, Now
Let's Just Calm Down, Now
“Do not say, “I’ll pay you back for this wrong!” Wait for the LORD, and he will deliver you.” – Proverbs 20:22
How do you respond when someone offends or wrongs you?
You’ve probably heard it in several movies,
“I’m going to get you if it’s the last thing I do!!”
We all like to get back at the person who wronged us. It’s born out of our sense of justice. Something unjust has been done to us and now it must be rectified. The wrong-doer must be punished.
Justice is good, but there is an order to how justice is to be delivered.
If someone breaks into your home while you are away and steals your valuables, you can’t just hunt the person down beat them up. You have the right to justice, but you don’t have the right to exact that justice yourself. Rather, you call the police, who arrest the thief, who is tried before a jury and sentenced by a judge. That judge’s sentence is carried out by correctional workers.
God’s justice has an order, too.
His order is to let Him take care of it. He often uses the authorities of this world. In fact, that is one of the primary reasons God establishes those authorities. Revenge, though, is not our job. It’s not our place.
This is good. It’s a better way.
Seeking revenge has a way of destroying the person seeking that revenge, sometimes even more than the person who is being sought. There’s no peace in revenge. There’s no love in revenge. There’s no justice in revenge.
So, God tells us to calm down, pray, and leave it up to Him. It’s not that you can’t seek justice through the proper channels. Again, God set those authorities over us. So, to use those authorities is to turn it over to God. In doing so, you get to let go. You can forgive and move on. You also learn to trust God more.
So, next time you are wronged, remember Proverbs 20:22 and take a breath. God will deliver. He always does, whether here on earth or on the Day of Judgment.
Heavenly Father,
Give me the self-control and wisdom to leave justice in Your perfectly just hands rather than trying to take revenge.
Amen.

Pastor Kurt

Confession and Forgiveness:
P: As we gather, today, let us cleanse our hearts and our consciences by confessing our sin to God.
(Time of silence for reflection and confession)
C: Heavenly Father, we confess that we are sinful and unclean. We have sinned against you and against our neighbor in our thoughts, words, and actions. We are truly sorry for our sins and sincerely repent of them. We ask for Your mercy. For the sake of Jesus Christ’s bitter suffering and death, please forgive us and renew us that we may walk in Your Spirit to the glory of Your holy name.
P: The Lord has heard your confession. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of the Lord, in the stead and by the command of my Lord, Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen
Song of Praise and Thanksgiving: In Christ Alone
In Christ alone, my hope is found.
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground.
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All. Here in the love of Christ, I stand
In Christ alone, who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones He came to save
‘til on that cross, as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid, Here in the death of Christ I live
There in the ground, His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day, up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory, Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine, Bought with the precious blood of Christ
No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand
‘til He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand
No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand
‘til He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand
Old Testament Reading: Numbers 21:4-9
From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.” Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.
Epistle Reading: Ephesians 2:1-10
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Gospel Reading: John 3:14-21
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
Sermon Song: O Praise The Name (Anástasis)
I cast my mind to Calvary where Jesus bled and died for me
I see His wounds, His hands, His feet.
My Savior on that cursed tree
His body bound and drenched in tears.
They laid Him down in Joseph’s tomb
The entrance sealed by heavy stone
Messiah still and all alone
Chorus:
O praise the Name of the Lord our God
O praise His Name forevermore
For endless days, we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God
Then on the third, at break of dawn
The Son of heaven rose again
O trampled death, where is your sting.
The angels roar for Christ the King
Chorus:
O praise the Name of the Lord our God
O praise His Name forevermore
For endless days, we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God
He shall return in robes of white.
The blazing sun shall pierce the night
And I will rise among the saints,
My gaze transfixed on Jesus’ face
Chorus 2x
Oh Lord, oh Lord, our God
Sermon – What It’s All About
Prayers
Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God
the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen
Benediction

Come all you sinners, come find His mercy
Come to the table, He will satisfy
Taste of His goodness, find what you’re looking for

For God so loved the world that He gave us His

The power of Hell forever defeated
Now it is well, I’m Walking in freedom

Restoration and Salvation
Restoration and Salvation
“Restore us, O God Almighty; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.” –
Have you ever saved something someone else was going to throw away?
Curb Alert!
A few times a week, I see posts in my neighborhood Facebook Group for “Curb Alerts.” Curb alerts are when someone is going to throw something out, but they think someone else might want it. So, they put it out on the curb and post a picture. Whoever wants it, can just drive by and pick it up.
When people swing by and pick up a curb alert item, they are saving that item from being thrown out. Most curb alerts are successful in finding someone who wants the item, but sometimes the item simply stays on the curb for the trash guys to pick up.
Why are some things left on the curb?
While curb alerts do extend the life of many items some items are just too damaged, out of style, or gross for people to take. These items would have to be renovated and restored to be worth saving.
God doesn’t leave you by the curb.
The truth is that we are pretty damaged and gross by sin. God would have every reason to just ignore the curb alert for us, but God doesn’t work that way. No one is too damaged, gross, or out of style for God.
There’s a show on Netflix called, The Repair Shop. It’s described as:
“Expert artisans restore timeworn family heirlooms with touching sentimental value while also uncovering their uniquely rich histories.”
That’s what God does for us. He doesn’t just save us, He restores us with His expert hand. God doesn’t save us only to have a bunch of filthy, broken sinner laying around in Heaven. He removes all the dirty sin, fixes all the damaged parts, and makes us new again in a way no one else can.
Is it time for a curb alert?
The curb isn’t a fun place to be. It’s scary to be out there, away from your comfort zone. You may wonder whether God will really decide to come get you. You may feel too damaged and dirty.
You don’t have to fix yourself first with God. You don’t have to clean up your act first. Let God do that. He doesn’t save us because we are in good enough condition to be worth saving. He saves us because He loves us and values us. He saves us because we are His precious creation, worth restoring at any cost, even the cost of Jesus’ life.
In fact, it’s God who issues our curb alert. He takes us out of our comfort zone. By His Spirit, working through His Word, He brings us to the curb of repentance where Jesus picks us up and restores us.
Heavenly Father,
I’ve been used and damaged. I’m soiled with sin. I need to be restored by Your loving, expert hands. Thank You for saving me. Thank You, also, for not leaving me damaged and filthy, but cleaning me up and restoring me.
Amen.
Tomorrow, I hope you will come to worship. Come as you are. Receive God’s forgiveness and grace.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Kurt
They Just Don’t Make Things Like They Used To
They Just Don't Make Things Like They Used To
“Lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath; the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment and its inhabitants die like flies. But my salvation will last forever, my righteousness will never fail.” – Isaiah 51:6
What have you had to replace recently?
I was talking with an A/C repair guy a few months ago. One of the questions I asked him was how long A/C units are supposed to last. He told me units used to easily last 15-20+ years. These days, however, you’re lucky to get 15 years out of a unit.
They just don’t make them like they used to.
You’ve probably heard that phrase before. It seems to be the case with so many things these days.
Have you ever thought that about the earth or the heavens?
Look up at the sky. Take a long look at the stars. One day they will be gone. Look at the earth beneath your feet. It too will be destroyed. Look all around you. The cars, the buildings, and even the people will all decay. If you are young, just ask one of your more seasoned friends. These bodies of ours start to fall apart after a while. That’s what sin does to things.
The earth and heavens won’t last, but one day they will.
God’s righteousness will not fail nor will His salvation. One day, the dead will be raised and those Christians still alive will join the Lord in the sky as He returns and judges all people. Then, those who are in Christ, will be given new bodies that will not get sick and will never die or decay.
God will create a new heaven and a new earth.
There will be no sin and no death, only peace, life, and righteousness. This heaven and earth as well as our new bodies will be made to last, not for 15-20 years or even 1500-2000 years, but for all time…for eternity.
So, focus on that which is eternal.
It makes no sense to invest all your time and energy in things that will only last a short time. Invest your time and energy on things that will last into eternity.
Heavenly Father,
Open my eyes to the temporary nature of all that is around me and draw me towards that which is eternal, love, the Gospel, and all those who will receive the Gospel. Also, guard me against despairing over the inevitable fact that all the earthly things around me, even my own body, will fall apart. Instead, focus my mind on Your sure promise of eternal life and a new heaven and new earth.
Amen.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Kurt
A Cry For Mercy
A Cry For Mercy
“Hear my prayer, O LORD; listen to my cry for mercy. In the day of my trouble I will call to you, for you will answer me.” – Psalm 86:6-7
When is a cry for help also a cry for mercy?
In our passage for today, David calls out for help from God. Most, if not all of us, have done the same. We find ourselves in a situation where we have no idea how to get out, how to find safety. So, we call our to God in our desperation.
A Situation of Our Own Creation
Sometimes, we are in this situation because we put ourselves there. Maybe we meant to do what we did and it didn’t work out or maybe we didn’t realize what we were doing, but either way, we ended up in our predicament with our own hands.
Now, we find ourselves in a desperate situation with no solution. “Help me, God!” we cry out.
In those moments we realize our sinfulness, our foolishness, and our utter weakness. As humiliating as it is, these are all good things. In these moments we realize our utter dependence on God and submit, once again to Him. Praise God for these moments which rightfully align us to God.
A Situation of Someone Else’s Creation
Sometimes, these situations are not our fault. Someone has intended wickedness toward us through no fault of our own. The world is wicked and does wicked things.
In these cases do we call out to God with righteous indignation or is it still a cry for mercy. Yes and yes. The situation is not our fault and we may rightly call out to God to set things right for us. Then again, we are still sinful and we have no right to call out to God for anything.
It would be like one traitor turning on another. Yes, we are right to call out their treachery, but we are still traitors, ourselves.
So, even in these situations, it is still a cry for mercy.
The fact is that we are all sinners, even in our best moments. Whether our claim to being wronged is correct or not doesn’t change our own sinfulness. So, we never stand before God demanding His help as though we deserve it.
As Martin Luther said,
“This is true. We are all beggars.”
None of us deserve to stand before God at all. We are all sinners in desperate need of forgiveness and salvation. Thankfully, God provides our forgiveness and salvation. Jesus died for our forgiveness and salvation. God gave us exactly what we needed.
So, call out to God in your time of need.
He will listen. However, do not call out in arrogance as though you deserve anything. Call out as one who deserves nothing but knows the one who can help will gladly do it for the one they love. Call out as a child who knows their Father loves them and will always care for them, even when they don’t deserve to be helped.
That is what God does. He helps us, not because we deserve it, but because He loves us and desires to help us.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for loving me and helping me though I know I don’t deserve any of it. Your grace and mercy are beyond anything I could expect, yet You give it freely and abundantly. May I always turn to You, both in my time of need and in my time of plenty.
Amen.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Kurt
We Escaped…And Had a Great Time Doing It!
We Escaped...And Had a Great Time Doing It!
This past Saturday, the youth (and a few of us older youth) talked about God our creator, and then did an escape room. It was great!
Who Is God?
We arrived at Imagine Escape Rooms around 11:30am (well, most of us) and went into a side room. There we talked about who God is. The youth had some great responses about how God is the creator, an authority, a friend, and our savior. We talked a little about Colossians 1:15-17 and how God didn’t just create us and walk away, but continues to sustain us and all creation and how He knows every part of us and loves us more than we can imagine.
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” – Colossians 1:15-17
Let The Challenge Begin!!
Next, we split into two teams. The classic men against women…Team Nar against team Fire-Breathing Marshmallow. The women demanded the harder escape room. The men didn’t mind.
Team Fire-Breathing Marshmallows
Team Nar
It was a harrowing challenge and both teams barely made it out with their lives (that might be a slight exaggeration). Both teams did make it out, though, with only seconds remaining.
Team Nar – Kadon somehow unlocked one lock without any clues. The police called later about a bank robbery, but we’re pretty sure he wasn’t involved. Gunnar showed his fishing prowess by catching several toy sea creatures with a magnet. Nick and Jakob did some brilliant deciphering and Matthew and Jacob were awesome at finding clues and working the computer. Pastor Kurt directed the group from the side (I think he took a nap at one point).
Team Fire-Breathing Marshmallow – Tanisha and Kaylee used their size advantage to crawl under a hatch and they weren’t stumped by the tree puzzle. Gabby, Nicole and Ryleigh brought it all together at the end to escape just in time. Kelsey was an amazing cheerleader throughout. Ginger D. led the team with the cool, calm demeanor of an experienced leader and, unlike Pastor Kurt, didn’t sleep.
Meanwhile, Terrell and Ginger T. watched in the control room like the game masters of the Hunger Games. I’m pretty sure Terrell was heard saying, “May the odds be ever in your favor.” as he selected tributes…I mean divided up the teams.
All in all we had a great time and finished up with some great food at Chic-Fil-A.
Our next event is a trip to Sand Key Beach on the afternoon of April 11. Watch for more details coming soon.
Till next time,
Terrell and Pastor Kurt
Be Prepared
Be Prepared!
“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” – 1 Peter 3:15
Are you an evangelist? How about a witness?
My daughter recently found a new show that she really likes. I have seen some of it, but I could tell you a lot more about it than what I’ve seen. Why? It’s because she tells me about it all the time.
It’s interesting how easily we tell others about the shows or movies we watch, the new job we start, the recent football/hockey/baseball game, the new person we’re dating, etc., yet when it comes to telling others about Jesus, we freeze up. We feel uncomfortable and like we don’t know how to talk about Jesus.
Have you ever thought about telling someone about a movie you just saw, but then decided not to because you weren’t sure you would use the right words or be able to answer every question? Probably not. Have you ever decided not to talk about Jesus for the same reasons?
We start to feel these fears and then we reason in our head,
“I’m just not an evangelist.”
“That’s for those special people who are gifted with the spiritual gift of evangelism.”
There certainly are people who are specially gifted in evangelism.
“And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers,” – Ephesians 4:11
However, 1 Peter 3:15 isn’t just talking to evangelists. It’s talking to all of us.
You are a witness.
I like to think of the difference between an evangelist and a witness as kind of like the difference between a movie’s marketing division and the people who go see a movie, become a fan, and tell others about it.
Marketers are trained. They know what words to use and not use. They do more than convey information, they convey feeling and they entice. A fan hasn’t received special training and they don’t carefully weigh every word. They just know they like a movie and want to share that with others.
Evangelists have a gift. The Spirit works through them and they are driven to share the Gospel. They seem to be able to talk to anyone and veer the conversation towards Jesus.
Witnesses still have the spirit, but maybe not a specific spiritual gift for evangelism. They may not be able to veer conversations to Jesus, but they can certainly talk about him when the opportunity arises. They just know they love Jesus and they want to share that with others.
These are just my definitions here, but whether someone uses these terms in this way or not, we should all be able to agree that whether we have the gift of evangelism or not, we all have both the command and the blessing to be able to witness to the love of Jesus when the opportunity presents itself.
It doesn’t require a degree or a unique spiritual gift. You don’t have to have all the answers, but you do need to be prepared. So, let’s start.
- Pray.
- Write down a short, simple Gospel message.
- Write down a brief description of what God has done in your life.
- Pray that God would give you the opportunity to share your witness with someone and give you the courage to do it.
