Tell Me Your Story
Tell Me Your Story
“As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.” – Mark 5:18-20
Do you feel like you don’t know how to tell others about Jesus?
Telling others about Jesus is one of the greatest things we can do. Sadly, it’s also the one thing most Christians find to be the scariest thing they do (or don’t do).
Why Are We Afraid?
I think our fear of sharing the Gospel usually comes from two things, the fear the message will be rejected and the fear that we will mess up the message.
The Fear That The Message Will Be Rejected:
No one wants to feel rejected, however, I have great comfort for you. The Bible tells us over and over it is God who creates faith in people, not the person sharing the Gospel nor even the person hearing the Gospel.
We share the message and God does the rest.
The Scriptures also tell us that God’s Word will not return void. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the person will become a faithful Christian, but it does mean God will work in their heart.
So, we don’t have to fear because it’s not up to us to “convert” the person and we can trust that God will do what He promises.
What if I mess up the message?
The basic Gospel message is actually pretty simple. We all sin. Jesus died on the cross so we can be forgiven. If we believe in Jesus we will be saved.
Sometimes, however, we think the message needs to be more complex. It doesn’t. We can simply share our story and that simple Gospel truth and let God do His work!
Don’t Force Your Beliefs On Me!
We’ve all heard this said. Maybe not in person, but certainly on TV. Sometimes when sharing the Gospel, we can feel like we are overstepping our bounds; but isn’t it interesting that we don’t feel like that when we talk about our favorite movie or band or what we did over the weekend.
These are normal things to talk about as we share our lives with others. So is talking about the most important thing in your life. That’s what the demon-possessed man did in our passage.
Sharing our lives with others can often be the easiest way to share the Gospel. We’re not trying to sell something, just share what Jesus has done. By sharing how God has worked in your life, it can take the “sales-y-ness” away and make it simply talking about what’s going on in your life and how Jesus affects that.
So, what’s your story?
Dear Jesus,
You have done so much in my life. Rid me of the fear of talking about You to others. Help me to feel as comfortable talking about You as I do my weekend plans and may others come to believe in You by hearing about You.
Amen.

Pastor Kurt
Defend Me From Sin!
Defend Me From Sin!
“Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers; do not let me eat their delicacies.” – Psalm 141:4
What do you do when you feel tempted or when others are tempting you to sin?
In the Lutheran Church, we talk a lot about forgiveness and grace. We need it because we all sin. However, what do we do in that time before we sin when we start to feel tempted?
Without Christ we are slaves to sin, addicted with no hope of sobriety. However, in Christ we are set free from sin. Yes, Jesus died to forgive our sins, but He also freed us from the chains of sin as well.
We Are Sinners and Saints
Yet, we still live in a broken and fallen world. Sin and evil are all around us every day. Our sinful nature still works against us. We’d love to say we are sickened by the very thought of sin, but the truth is we still remember the illusory sweet taste of sin. We crave it at times and can be drawn to it by the devil, the world, or our very own flesh. We are, at the same time, sinner and saint.
The Sweet Temptation of Sin
Do you remember the story of Samson? He was the Arnold Schwarzenegger of Israel. At one point (see Judges 14) Samson was walking down a path and a lion came upon him. He killed the lion and left it on the side of the path. A few days later Samson was returning on that same path and he came across the lion.
He saw that bees had settled in the carcass of the lion and there was honey. Now, think about the roadkill raccoons or cats we’ve all seen and multiply the grossness by 10.
What does Samson do?
He reached down into the dead and rotting carcass, scraped out the honey, and ate it.
Sin can be like this, reaching into things that are vile, disgusting, and filled with death all to get a taste of the sweetness of the sin our sinful nature is addicted to.
You Don’t Have to Eat the Honey
We don’t have to live like that anymore. Now, living in our freedom, we can delight in the good Law of the Lord. We can revile that which is evil by the power of the Holy Spirit.
So, we pray, as the psalmist did, that we would not be drawn to what is evil, we would not see it as sweet and would not take part in it. We want to do what is right in the eyes of the Lord.
We won’t do this perfectly.
We will always struggle with temptation. However, when we fall, we also know we can turn to God then and confess our sins. He is merciful and will forgive and renew us. (I told you we Lutherans talk about God’s grace a lot.)
We are still saints, made pure by the blood of the Lamb.
Dear Jesus,
Thank you for giving us a new nature. Please guard my heart. Don’t let me be tempted by what is vile, disgusting, and filled with death. Give me a holy revulsion for what is sinful and evil. And please forgive me for the times I have given into temptation.
Amen

Imitators and Modelers
Imitators and Modelers
“You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia.” – 1 Thessalonians 1:6-7
Who is your hero?
Who do you try to imitate in life?
We all have people we look up to, people who we try to emulate in our lives or at least in some aspect of our lives. Jesus is the ultimate person to look up to.
How do we imitate Jesus in our lives?
There are several ways we can imitate Jesus.
- Pray regularly
- Be humble
- Proclaim the Kingdom of God to unbelievers
- Teach others about God
- etc.
There is one other way we may imitate Jesus that we may not have thought about…and may not like very much. No, it’s not turning water into wine at parties or walking on water (though that would be cool).
It’s through suffering.
The members of the church in Thessalonica were experiencing great suffering for their faith. Yet, they experienced that suffering with joy. They understood that the Gospel was worth their suffering, both for themselves and so others could hear about Jesus.
Jesus knows suffering. Jesus’ ministry was marked repeatedly by suffering. He was mocked, ridiculed, harassed, and plotted against by the people He came to save, no less. Ultimately, He was falsely accused, tried, and found guilty. He was beaten and spit upon and had a crown of thorns shoved onto His head. Then He was nailed to a cross where He continued to suffer and die.
The church at Thessalonica, like many others at that time and even still today, imitated Christ in His suffering and modeled humility, patience, and even joy, like Christ, in their suffering.
They shined the light of Christ through their suffering.
Sometimes we can feel like we are being punished when we suffer, but the truth is that, sometimes, it is in our suffering that we shine the brightest. When we go through hardship, especially for the sake of Christ, people see that. It’s like a light in a dark place.
That witness can change lives just like Christ’s suffering changed our lives.
Dear Jesus,
May I be more and more like You every day. If that means suffering, help me to suffer with humility, patience, and joy, imitating You that Your light might shine into the lives of those around me.
Amen.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Kurt
Is God Good?
Is God Good?
“Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” – Matthew 6:33
Do you believe that God is good?
To most Christians, this seems to be a pretty obvious question and answer.
“Of course God is Good!”
It’s all around us. We have songs singing about how good God is. We have books telling us. We have posters and memes and sermons and so much more. Of course, God is good. However, that wasn’t the question.
Do YOU BELIEVE that God is good?
Whether God is good or not is not affected by what you or I believe, but how you act towards God is very much affected by whether you believe God is good.
What would make God good?
- He must come through on His promises.
- He must provide what is truly needed and helpful.
- He must act out of loving-kindness, not selfish ambition.
God’s Promise
In our passage from Matthew, we are given a promise. If we seek first the Kingdom of God, God will provide “all these things.” From the surrounding context, we know that “all these things” refers to clothing and food and can infer it means everything we need for this life.
If God is good, He must, therefore, keep His promise and give us what we need. Otherwise, He would be a liar. Numbers 23:19 tells us,
“God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind.“
He must also give us what is truly needed and helpful. If He gave us the wrong things or harmful things, He would be either incompetent or a deceiver. James 1:17 tells us,
“Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.“
He must act out of love or He is just self-seeking and doing this for His own gain. Yet, 1 John 4:10 tells us,
“This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”
Our Response
Love always bids a response. It asks us to love in return. It asks us to trust. In the case of Matthew 6:33, God’s love for us tells us to seek His Kingdom first, trusting that our good and loving Father will provide all that we need…and He will. He gives even when we don’t do a good job of seeking His Kingdom. Yet, He still says to do it because He knows that seeking His Kingdom is also good for us.
Heavenly Father,
You care for me more than I know. I know You keep Your promises. I know Your gifts are all good. I know You love me. Help me to trust Your love and Your goodness and seek You in all that I do.
Amen.

Heart Surgery
Heart Surgery
“Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel? For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!” – Ezekiel 18:31-32
What are the worst problems you see in the world, today?
Would you say racism, greed, abuse, or something else?
How do we end such horrible practices?
There are plenty of solutions offered by talking heads, politicians, and our chatty neighbor, but the truth is that all the solutions in the world can’t fix what these issues truly are…a heart problem.
Ezekiel was a prophet to Israel at a time when Israel had been exiled from the Promised Land. God’s own chosen people were exiled from the land God had given them and God had allowed this to happen! Why?
Israel had turned away from God and, instead, were worshiping idols.
We can all probably understand why God would cause His chosen people to be exiled. They had betrayed Him like an unfaithful spouse or a fake friend.
Yet, God continued to provide a way to make things right. How amazing is that? Israel turned away from God to worship hand-made idols of stone and wood and, yet, He continues to plead with Israel to return to Him. Repent and live!
God is offering them a new heart and a new spirit, His Spirit.
God still does!
This is true today for us as well. If we turn away from God, He is always working to bring us back to Him. Sure, we may not worship idols of wood and stone, but here in the U.S. we have plenty of our own idols.
We may worship…
- Money
- Pleasure
- Power
- Fill in the blank
God warns us not to turn away from Him and not to put these things above Him. Yet, people do, even those who believe in Jesus still struggle with trusting other things over God.
Perhaps the solution to many of these problems in our world aren’t found in new policies or marches, but in the Gospel. It is only through the Gospel that people’s hearts will be changed. There will still be sin in the world, even in the heart of the believer, but there is also forgiveness for the believer and God’s Spirit working and living in their hearts.
God Offers Us a New Heart
What a wonderful message we have that, in Jesus Christ, our sins are forgiven. That’s why we keep coming back to the cross, back to the ultimate place where God provided the way, through Jesus’ death and resurrection, for us to rid ourselves of all our offenses and get a new heart and a new spirit!!
Heavenly Father,
As I look at the world, today, it breaks my heart to see so many suffering and such horrible things being done. I ask that You would cause Your Gospel to go forth and change the hearts and minds of people towards You. Help me to be a part of that great witness and continue to turn my heart to You.
Amen.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Kurt
What a Blessing!
What a Blessing!!
“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” – 2 Corinthians 13:14
What is your favorite departing blessing or benediction?
Many pastors end our worship services with the Aaronic Benediction (The Lord bless you and keep you…). The Irish have some pretty amusing blessings. There is probably a blessing or two which you really love.
Rather than simply signing off, Paul ends 2 Corinthians with the above benediction/blessing. It is rich in meaning.
The Grace of the Lord, Jesus Christ – How does God deal with you? It isn’t through laws and commands, it is through the grace of Jesus. Grace is unearned and undeserved favor. Rather than dealing with you according to your sins, He died for you so you could be forgiven and made a Child of God.
The Love of God – God is bound to you in love. He created you out of love, He redeemed you out of love, and He sustains you both physically and in faith out of love. God made you His Child through the grace of Jesus and loves you as a good Father. He protects you, supplies all your needs, and demonstrates the greatest of love for you.
The Fellowship of the Holy Spirit – God then unifies us by His Spirit. He joins you with Himself, dwelling in You and filling You. He joins you to His church, unifying you with all believers everywhere and of every time. God continues to commune with you and you with all believers through the sacramental meal of Communion.
May God be with you, the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God is not some distant God nor is He some non-descript energy in the sky. He is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You were baptized into the Triune God and it is the Triune God who goes with You, dealing with you by grace, bound to you by love, and unified with you and all believers.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your love, grace, and fellowship. Be with me. Deal with me according to Your unfathomable grace. Surround me with Your boundless love. Always stay with me.
Amen.
Now…May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
Amen.

Pastor Kurt

Invocation
Confession and Forgiveness:
P: Come into the presence of the Lord our God.
C: Have mercy, O Lord. If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand?
P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
C: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
(a time of silence to reflect and personally confess our sins)
P: I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin. Let us confess our sin before the Lord.
C: Heavenly Father, we confess that we are sinners. We have sinned against you and our neighbors. We have not loved you with our whole heart and we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not trusted You when struggles arose and questioned Your love when we face trails. We justly deserve Your punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
P: The Lord is gracious and merciful. He promises to forgive our sins. Therefore, upon this, your confession, as a called and ordained servant of the Lord, in the stead and by the command of my Lord, Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
Song of Praise: By Grace I’m Saved w/ Amazing Grace
By grace I’m saved, grace free and boundless;
My soul, believe and doubt it not.
Why stagger at this word of promise?
Has Scripture ever falsehood taught?
No! Then this word must true remain;
By grace you too will life obtain.
By grace God’s Son, our only Savior,
Came down to earth to bear our sin.
Was it because of your own merit,
That Jesus died your soul to win?
No, it was grace, and grace alone,
That brought Him from His heav’nly throne.
By grace! On this I’ll rest when dying; In Jesus’ promise I rejoice;
For though I know my heart’s condition,
I also know my Savior’s voice.
My heart is glad, all grief has flown,
Since I am saved by grace alone.
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found. Was blind but now I see.
Old Testament Reading – Isaiah 55:6-9
“Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Epistle Reading – Philippians 1:12–14, 19–21
I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear…
…for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Children’s Message (Children dismissed to Children’s Church)
Sermon Hymn – Bring the Rain
I can count a million times, People asking me how I
Can praise You with all that I’ve gone through
The question just amazes me Can circumstances possibly
Change who I forever am in You
Maybe since my life was changed, Long before these rainy days
It’s never really ever crossed my mind
To turn my back on you oh Lord, My only shelter from the storms
But instead I draw closer through these times. So, I pray
Chorus:
Bring me joy, bring me peace. Bring the chance to be free
Bring me anything that brings You glory
And I know There’ll be days, when this life brings me pain
But if that’s what it takes to praise You
Jesus Bring the Rain
I am Yours regardless of the dark clouds that may loom above
Because You are much greater than my pain
You who made a way for me, by suffering Your destiny
So tell me what’s a little rain So, I pray
Chorus
Holy, Holy, Holy. Holy, Holy, Holy
Is the Lord God Almighty. Is the Lord God Almighty
Repeat 3x
Sermon – “That’s Not Fair!”
Matthew 20:1-16
“For the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’
And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ So the last will be first, and the first last.”

Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God
the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen

Becoming Less
Becoming Less
“He must become greater; I must become less.” – John 3:30
Who is the center of your universe?
One of the things I’ve noticed over the years raising kids and working with kids, especially in their younger years, is how much their world revolves around them. They want to know everything that’s going on around them. When someone gets something, they want to know they can have something. When someone tells a story, they immediately relate it to something about themselves.
This is a normal thing for a child, but the truth is we don’t change that much as we grow up. Even as adults we often put ourselves in the center of everything.
The Big Celebrity Before Jesus
In our passage for today, John the Baptist is speaking about the Christ. John had become a big deal. He was making waves with his interesting choice of clothes and food and preaching a message of repentance. Lots of people were coming out to see him and even more had heard of him.
The temptation for anyone in that situation is to try to become more and more famous and popular. However, John knew that wasn’t his role. He was just preparing the way. Someone greater was coming. So, John’s job was to get people ready and then step aside. He must become less and Jesus must become greater.
The Great Celebrity of Today
Our lives are similar. It can be very tempting to make things about us. When we start to get noticed and praised, we want that to continue and get more of it. Let’s face it, we often are the greatest celebrity of our own lives and many would like to be great in the eyes of others as well.
However, our lives, like John’s, have a greater purpose. As followers of Jesus, we point to Him. The Bible says we are the light of the world, and we are, it’s just that our light is a reflection of the true light of the world, Jesus. So, we must become less and He must become greater.
If You Want to Be Great, Become the Least
Jesus showed us this Himself. He was willing to become less, to become man. He was willing to suffer and die so that we could become more…so we could become the children of God. As Jesus said,
“Even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Matthew 20:28
Dear Jesus,
Thank You for coming to serve and give Your life for us. Help us to live in such a way that our lives point to You so that others will come to know Your saving grace. May we become less and You become more.
Amen
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Kurt
