Video Notes:

• Once again, we speak of suffering, though this time not at the hands of other people.
• The life of the Christian is, in many ways, a life of suffering. It’s a life of the cross.
• Also, once again, our example is Jesus.
• We should be like Jesus who, though tempted, did not sin. Hebrews 4:15-16
• We should arm ourselves in the same mindset as Christ, who gladly suffered for us.
• What does it mean to suffer in the flesh? What is the flesh?
• Yes, we may suffer physically, but we also suffer by denying our sinful nature (desires, doctrines, etc.). Thus, to suffer in the flesh is to cease from sin.
• Thus the life of the Christian is the life of the cross, a constant battle to subdue the flesh.

Video Notes:

• If you do good, generally, you will be treated well, though not always.
• If you do suffer for doing good and obeying God, God will bless you (with what?) Sometimes a way out. Always His presence and strength and salvation as well as endurance.
• Romans 5:3-5
• Honor Christ as Lord? We honor Jesus by recognizing that He is Lord, ruler, savior.
• Have an answer. Why do good? Why do what is righteous? Because Jesus is your Lord and savior. (Share the Gospel) We should be prepared so it’s good to think through what you might say.
• Do this in gentleness and with respect. The hope is they will receive faith.
• Finishes with what Peter has already covered. Those who mistreat you for doing good will be put to shame if they don’t repent and it is better to suffer for doing good and doing evil (deserved).

Video Notes:

• The way of God is contrary to that of our sinful nature and the world. Don’t hate and retaliate against those who mistreat you. Bless them (with love, prayer, respect, and the Gospel). We do what God has done.
• In this we are blessed.
• There are also actually very practical effects as well (honey attracts more than vinegar)
• Psalm 34:12-16
• The Psalmist starts with a question, “What man is there who desire life, etc.” Peter gives the answer, “you Christians”. You desire life, etc.
• Even in the forgiven and saved state that we are in, we should try to avoid sin and instead pursue righteousness and peace. This is who you are (Romans 6:1-4)
• Who are the righteous and who are the evil? Romans 3:21-22
• This brings us back to verse 9

Video Notes:

• Unity of mind – We have different roles and works, but all serve God and all enjoy their calling and we encourage each other’s call.
• Also, seek unity in the truth of God’s Word.
• Sympathy – rejoice together, mourn together.
• Know each other and care.
• Brotherly love – familial love for all other Christians, especially those in your community.
• Tender heart – Think of a parent towards their child.
• Humble mind – Not arrogant, but thinking highly of others and serving.

Video Notes:

• In the previous few verses 1 Peter addressed a wife’s attitude and action toward her husband, particularly if their husband is not a believer.
• Now, how is the husband to be towards his wife?
• Live with your wife (don’t divorce) and love, honor, and respect your wife.
• Ephesians 5:25
• We see a pattern with God. There is order. In fact, there is order in nearly every relationship.
• The order has one submitting to the other, but the one leading is to lead as a servant, looking out for the needs of the other.
• In an understanding way…showing honor (listening to your wife, working to understand, honoring your wife before others, respecting your wife as a parent, etc.)
• While there are roles, husband and wife are same before God in salvation, co-heirs (Galatians 3:23-29)
• So that your prayers may not be hindered could mean a few things, but they are all good.

Note: I’m not sure if I brought this out clearly in the video, but this passage, while good for all marriages, is in the context of a Christian woman married to an unbelieving husband.

• What are you adorning yourself with?
• External adornments are meaningless and can be expensive. Physical beauty fades.
• The beauty of character, love, and respect (one of the #1 things men want on a basic level is respect)
• One of the worst things you can do to a man is belittle them and dismiss them.
• Why? Not because your husband is so great or even worthy. Doing it out of love of God.
• Daughters of Sarah (not just Abraham)
• Do good and do not fear anything frightening?

Video Notes:

• This is addressing a believing woman who is married to an unbelieving husband.
• The wife should continue to honor and respect her husband according to God’s order.
• This continues the theme of respecting and serving others from that past several verses in 1 Peter.
• The hope is that through her conduct, the husband would become a believer.
• 1 Corinthians 7:12-15

• Jesus entrusted Himself to the Father in His suffering
• God is our Good Shepherd and caretaker of our souls.
• We can entrust ourselves fully to God as well.

• Ultimately, when we are submitting to others, we are submitting to God.
• Peter is speaking both about servants/slaves, but also about all areas of our lives.
• We would do well in our culture, today, to learn to respect people more, especially people in authority.
• Slavery in the Bible different from what we think of as slavery.
