“Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.” – Proverbs 27:1
What are your plans for tomorrow?
“What will tomorrow bring?” has a much more serious meaning these days. With the way 2020 is going, that may be a scary question to ask. However, even in less turbulent times, the question can still generate fear…or maybe hope or excitement.
What do we really know about tomorrow, though?
Our passage from Proverbs warns us about boasting about tomorrow.
I remember a movie where a guy got a call that he was going to be hired by a company at twice his current salary. He strolled into his current job, told his boss he quit, said a few other less-than-kind words, and walked out the door. The next day, he called the person about the new job only to find out that person had been fired and the whole department was being shut down.
We don’t know what tomorrow will bring. A year ago, no one was talking about a pandemic, economic shutdown, or riots. Sure 2020 is unusual, but less world-encompassing events affect our lives every day.
Thanks, Pastor, I wasn’t scared about tomorrow before, but now I am!
Don’t worry.
No, I mean it. Don’t worry. You don’t need to be anxious. Proverbs warns us about boasting about tomorrow, but Jesus tells us not to worry about it either.
“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” – Matthew 6:31-33
We don’t need to worry about tomorrow because God knows what you need before you even realize there’s a problem. He can handle anything that comes our way.
So, where does this leave us?
This leaves us the same place we are in so many aspects of our life of faith. We aren’t arrogant or boastful because we know whatever good happens is from God. We also aren’t fearful, because we trust God. This is true of our righteousness before God. This is true of our finances. This is true of our job. This is true for all our tomorrows.
Heavenly Father,
You know what I need and will provide. Keep me from being arrogant or putting too much trust in my plans. I humbly admit I don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but I know You do and You promise to take care of me. Help me to trust You will all my tomorrows.
“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.” – Psalm 138:8
Do you ever feel like life is random or you have no purpose?
At the beginning of this year, I decided to build a workbench in my garage. I measured, drew plans, bought supplies, and got to work. Whenever I had an hour or two free, I’d go out into the garage and work on it for a while. I cut wood, sanded it, and applied polyurethane to make the work-top smooth, hard, and waterproof.
I had an idea of how long it would take to complete the project when I started, but I also figured it would take longer. I’ve found these projects always take longer than I expect. It took about a month, but I finished it. Now, I have an area to store tools and work on other projects.
You Have a Purpose God started a project when He caused you to be conceived in your mother’s womb. You weren’t an accident, even if your parents didn’t plan you. God planned you. He knew you from before creation. He has a purpose for you and He will complete it.
What is My Purpose? It’s good to realize that you are not an accident and have a purpose, but what is your purpose. A lot of people worry greatly about whether they are actually living God’s purpose for them. “Should I be a doctor or a teacher or a mechanic?” You don’t need to worry.
First and foremost, your purpose is to be redeemed by Jesus, given new life in Him, worship and honor Him, and be with Him for all eternity. You can do that whether you are a doctor, teacher, mechanic, or something else. This is your purpose.
Sometimes we may feel like God wants us to do one specific thing, but more often I believe God gives us choices. My advice if you are stressing over a decision and are wondering what God’s will is, is to just go with what you think sounds best and determine that you will serve God in that situation.
God created you with the interests and skills that you have. He has been forming you all along the way for what’s to come. He will complete His work. This is true for any earthly purposes He has for you and is true for His eternal purpose He has for you. He will draw you to Him, redeem you, and give you eternal life in His presence.
Heavenly Father,
You have known me for longer than I have known myself. You have a purpose for me and will complete it. Help me to live according to Your purpose as one forgiven and redeemed. Let me never forget that You will complete Your work in me, to bring me to be with You forever.
