Opening Song – O Come O Come Emmanuel
O come, O come, Emmanuel And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appear
Chorus:
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee O Israel
O come, Though Key of David, come
And open wide our heav’nly home
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery
Chorus
O come, Thou Dayspring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
And drive away the shades of night
And pierce the clouds and bring us light
Chorus
O come, Desire of nations, bind all people in one heart and mind
Bid envy strife and quarrels cease
Fill all the world with heaven’s peace
Chorus
Invocation
Confession and Forgiveness:
P: Our Heavenly Father asks us to come into His presence.
C: But we are sinful and unworthy.
P: Yes, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, but Jesus Christ died on the cross that we may be forgiven and washed clean of all our sins by His blood spilled on the cross.
C: Lord, if You wash us, we will certainly be clean and pure.
P: We take a moment to bow before the His cross and silently reflect on our lives and confess our sins.
(Time of silence for reflection and confession)
P: Let us confess, together, our sins to God our Father.
C: Heavenly Father, we confess that we are sinners. We have sinned against you and our neighbors. We have not loved you with our whole heart and we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not lived out our faith out in our community. We justly deserve Your punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I, therefore, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen
Song of Praise and Thanksgiving: Emmanuel (Hallowed Manger Ground)
What hope we hold this starlit night
a King is born in Bethlehem
Our journey long, we seek the light
that leads to the hallowed manger ground
What fear we felt in the silent age
four hundred years can he be found
But broken by a baby’s cry
rejoice in the hallowed manger ground
Chorus:
Emmanuel, Emmanuel
God incarnate here to dwell
Emmanuel, Emmanuel
Praise His name Emmanuel
The son of God here, born to bleed
A crown of thorns would pierce His brow
And we beheld this offering
Exalted now, the King of kings
Praise God For the hallowed manger ground
Chorus
Praise His name Emmanuel
Old Testament Reading – Isaiah 7:1–14
In the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah the king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but could not yet mount an attack against it. When the house of David was told, “Syria is in league with Ephraim,” the heart of Ahaz and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind. And the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out to meet Ahaz, you and Shear-jashub your son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Washer’s Field. And say to him, ‘Be careful, be quiet, do not fear, and do not let your heart be faint because of these two smoldering stumps of firebrands, at the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria and the son of Remaliah. Because Syria, with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has devised evil against you, saying, “Let us go up against Judah and terrify it, and let us conquer it for ourselves, and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it,” thus says the Lord God: “‘It shall not stand, and it shall not come to pass. For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. And within sixty-five years Ephraim will be shattered from being a people. And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. If you are not firm in faith, you will not be firm at all.’” Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz: “Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.” And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
Epistle Reading – Galatians 4:4–6
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
Children’s Message (Children dismissed to Children’s Church)
Sermon Hymn – On Jordan’s Bank The Baptist’s Cry
On Jordan’s bank the Baptist’s cry
Announces that the Lord is nigh.
Awake and harken, for He brings
Glad tidings of the King of Kings!
We hail you as our Savior, Lord,
Our refuge and our great reward.
Without Your grace we waste away
Like flowers that wither and decay.
All praise to You, eternal Son,
Whose advent has our freedom won,
Whom with the Father we adore,
And Holy Spirit, evermore.
Sermon – “Jesus is the Son of Mary”
Matthew 1:18–25
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
P: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.

Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Closing Song: Go Tell It On The Mountain
Chorus:
Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere;
Go tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born.
While shepherds kept their watching o’er silent flocks by night,
Behold throughout the heavens there shone a Holy Light.
Chorus
The shepherds feared and trembled when lo! Above the earth,
Rang out the angel chorus that hailed our Savior’s birth.
Chorus
Down in a lowly manger, the humble Christ was born
And brought us God’s salvation that blessed Christmas morn!

Confession and Forgiveness:
P: As we gather, today, let us cleanse our hearts and our consciences by confessing our sin to God.
(Time of silence for reflection and confession)
C: Heavenly Father, we confess that we are sinful and unclean. We have sinned against you and against our neighbor in our thoughts, words, and actions. We are truly sorry for our sins and sincerely repent of them. We ask for Your mercy. For the sake of Jesus Christ’s bitter suffering and death, please forgive us and renew us that we may walk in Your Spirit to the glory of Your holy name.
P: The Lord has heard your confession. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of the Lord, in the stead and by the command of my Lord, Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen
Old Testament Reading – 1 Kings 11:1–10
Now King Solomon loved many foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the people of Israel,“You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love. He had 700 wives, who were princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart.
For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father. For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and did not wholly follow the Lord, as David his father had done.
Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Molech the abomination of the Ammonites, on the mountain east of Jerusalem. And so he did for all his foreign wives, who made offerings and sacrificed to their gods. And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods. But he did not keep what the Lord commanded.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
Epistle Reading – 2 Timothy 4:6–8
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
Sermon – “Jesus is the Son of Solomon”
Matthew 12:38–42
Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.
P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise be to You, o Christ.

Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

The third day he rose again from the dead.

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

What is Advent?
- The word “advent” is from the Latin word for “coming,”
- Advent begins the church year because the church year begins where Jesus’ earthly life began — in the Old Testament prophecies of his incarnation.
- The first half of the church year (approximately December through June) highlights the life of Christ. The second half (approximately June through November) highlights the teachings of Christ. The parables and miracles play a big part here. That’s “the church year in a nutshell,” and it should help reveal how Advent fits into “the big picture.”
- Advent also points to the next advent, Christ’s 2nd So, there tends to be a lot of eschatological (end times) talk.
The Advent Candles:
- The traditional use of Advent candles (sometimes held in a wreath) originated in eastern Germany even prior to the Reformation. As this tradition came down to us by the beginning of this century, it involved three purple or blue candles, one pink candle, and one white candle.
- The purple candles matched the purple paraments on the altar (purple for the royalty of the coming King). Many have replaced purple with blue candles to distinguish Advent from Lent. The blue represents hope. It is the color of the clear, pre-dawn sky. Day is coming! The pink candle was the third candle to be lit (not the fourth) on Gaudete Sunday, the Third Sunday of Advent. “Gaudete” means “Rejoice!” in Latin, which is taken from Phil. 4:4. (“Rejoice! … the Lord is near”). Hence a “pink” candle was used to signify “rejoicing.” Many also included a white “Christ candle” in the middle to be lit during the 12 days of Christmas (Dec. 25 to Jan. 5). White representing Christ.

Confession and Forgiveness:
P: We have come here today to worship the Lord. In worship we hear the Word of God, we receive God’s blessings, and respond with thanks and praise. We begin by seeking God’s blessing of forgiveness. He has promised to remove the guilt and shame of our sin through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross.
P: Let us confess our sins to the Lord.
(a time of silence to reflect and personally confess our sins)
P: Heavenly Father,
C: Heavenly Father,
P: I have done things that were wrong.
C: I have done things that were wrong.
P: I have been mean to others.
C: I have been mean to others.
P: I have not obeyed my parents.
C: I have not obeyed my parents.
P: I have not obeyed You, God.
C: I have not obeyed You, God.
P: But I am very sorry.
C: But I am very sorry.
P: Please forgive me.
C: Please forgive me.
P: I love You very much.
C: I love You very much.
P: And I know You love me, too.
C: And I know You love me, too.
P: God has heard your apology. He loves you very much. God has told us that when we believe and trust in Him, He makes us His children. As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our sins from us. He has told me to tell you that you are forgiven. So, as His servant, I forgive you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
Song: Jesus Loves Me
Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong, they are weak, but He is strong.
Chorus:
Yes, Jesus loves me, yes, Jesus loves me,
Yes, Jesus loves me, The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me, He who died. Heaven’s gates to open wide.
He will wash away my sin, let His little child come in.
Chorus
Jesus loves me when I’m good, when I do the things, I should.
Jesus loves me when I’m bad, even though it makes Him sad.
Chorus
First Reading – Genesis 22:1–2
After all this, God tested Abraham. God said, “Abraham!”
“Yes?” answered Abraham. “I’m listening.”
He said, “Take your dear son Isaac whom you love and go to the land of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I’ll point out to you.”
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
Children’s Message “Willing To Give Something Precious”
Second Song: I Will Follow
Intro Chorus:
Where You go, I’ll go Where You stay, I’ll stay
When You move, I’ll move I will follow…
All Your ways are good All Your ways are sure
I will trust in You alone
Higher than my sight High above my life
I will trust in You alone
Chorus:
Where You go, I’ll go Where You stay, I’ll stay
When You move, I’ll move I will follow You
Who You love, I’ll love How You serve I’ll serve
If this life I lose, I will follow You, yeah.
I will follow You
Light unto the world light unto my life
I will live for You alone
You’re the one I seek knowing I will find
All I need in You alone, in You alone
Chorus
In You there’s life everlasting
In You there’s freedom for my soul
In You there’s joy, unending joy and I will follow
Chorus 2x
Second Reading – Genesis 22:12-13
“Don’t lay a hand on that boy! Don’t touch him! Now I know how fearlessly you fear God; you didn’t hesitate to place your son, your dear son, on the altar for me.”
Abraham looked up. He saw a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. Abraham took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle Reading – Romans 8:31–34

Sermon Hymn – It Is Well with My Soul (When Peace Like a River)
When peace like a river attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
“It is well, it is well with my soul”
Chorus:
It is well, (it is well) with my soul (with my soul)
It is well, it is well with my soul
Though Satan should buffet tho’ trials may come,
Let this blest assurance control
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate
And hath shed His own blood for my soul
Chorus
My sin, oh the bliss of this glorious thought,
My sin not in part but in whole
Is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more.
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord oh my soul!
Chorus
And Lord haste the day when the faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll
The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend,
Even so it is well with my soul

Children’s Message “ God Spared Isaac, But Not Jesus”
Epistle Reading – Romans 8:31–34
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
Chorus 2x

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Closing Song – Savior of the Nations, Come
Savior of the nations, come, Virgin’s Son, make here Thy home!
Marvel now, O heaven and earth, That the Lord chose such a birth.
Not by human flesh and blood, By the Spirit of our God,
Was the Word of God made flesh–Woman’s Off-spring, pure and fresh.
From the Father forth He came and returneth to the same,
Captive leading death and hell– High the song of triumph swell!
Praise to God the Father sing, Praise to God the Son, our King,
Praise to God the Spirit be Ever and eternally.
