WORSHIP SERVICE FOR MAY 31, 2020 AT 11:30 AM
Welcome
Invocation
Confession and Forgiveness:
P: Come into the presence of God. It is God, Himself, who bids us to come to Him in prayer, especially when we have sinned, so that we may receive His forgiveness. So, we enter His courts with confidence that if we confess our sins, He will forgive us as He promised.
(a time of silence to reflect and personally confess our sins)
C: Heavenly Father, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart and have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ and His suffering and death on the cross, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen
P: The Lord our God is merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin. Therefore, I announce unto you the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. In His stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen. Praise God!
Song of Praise and Thanksgiving: Holy Spirit Ever Dwelling
Holy Spirit, ever dwelling, In the holiest realms of light;
Holy Spirit, ever brooding, O’er a world of gloom and night;
Holy Spirit, ever raising, those of earth to thrones on high;
Living, life-imparting Spirit, You we praise and magnify.
Holy Spirit, ever-living, As the Church’s very life;
Holy Spirit, ever striving, Through us in a ceaseless strife;
Holy Spirit, ever forming, In the Church the mind of Christ;
You we praise with endless worship, For your gifts and fruits unpriced.
Holy Spirit, ever working, Through the Church’s ministry;
Quick’ning, strength’ning, and absolving, setting captive sinners free;
Holy Spirit, ever binding, Age to age and soul to soul
In communion never-ending, You we worship and extol.
Old Testament Reading – Numbers 11:24–30
So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the tent. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took some of the power of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied—but did not do so again.
However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp. A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”
Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses’ aide since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”
But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!” Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.
Second Reading – Acts 2:1–21
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
“‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.
I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and
glorious day of the Lord.
And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
Children’s Message
Sermon Hymn – Come Holy Spirit (Original Mix)
Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest, And make our hearts Your place of rest;
Come with Your grace and heav’nly aid And fill the hearts which You have made.
Drive far away our enemy, And Your abiding peace bestow;
With You as our protecting guide, no evil can with us abide.
There’s nothing worth more, that could ever come close
Nothing can compare. You’re our living hope. Your presence, Lord
I’ve tasted and seen of the sweetest of loves
Where my heart becomes free, and my shame is undone
Your presence, Lord
Chorus:
Holy Spirit, You are welcome here.
Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere
Your glory, God is what our hearts long for
To be overcome by Your presence, Lord. Your presence, Lord
Praise we the Father and Son, And Holy Spirit, with them One,
And may the Son on us bestow the gifts that from the Spirit flow!
Chorus:
Holy Spirit, You are welcome here.
Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere
Your glory, God is what our hearts long for
To be overcome by Your presence, Lord. Your presence, Lord
Sermon – “A River Flowing Out”
John 7:37–39
On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Amen.
Prayers
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen
Benediction
Closing Song: I Will Follow
Where You go, I’ll go Where You stay, I’ll stay
When You move, I’ll move I will follow…
All Your ways are good, All Your ways are sure
I will trust in You alone
Higher than my sight, High above my life
I will trust in You alone
Chorus:
Where You go, I’ll go, Where You stay, I’ll stay
When You move, I’ll move, I will follow You
Who You love, I’ll love, How You serve I’ll serve
If this life I lose, I will follow You, Yeah.
I will follow You
Light unto the world, Light unto my life
I will live for You alone
You’re the one I seek, Knowing I will find
All I need in You alone, in You alone
(Chorus)
In You there’s life everlasting
In You there’s freedom for my soul
In You there’s joy, unending joy
and I will follow
(Chorus 2x)

THE ORDER OF SERVICE
INVOCATION
P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name.
Amen.
P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives You all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive You all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
P: Let us pray…
O God, You have prepared for those who love You such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love toward You, that we may love You above all things, and lead us, by faith, to Your eternal promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever.
C: Amen.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD
Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
DISTRIBUTION
POST-COMMUNION COLLECT
General We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

Invocation
Confession and Forgiveness:
P: Come into the presence of the Lord our God.
C: Have mercy, O Lord. If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand?
P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
C: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
(a time of silence to reflect and personally confess our sins)
P: I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin. Let us confess our sin before the Lord.
C: Heavenly Father, we confess that we are sinners. We have sinned against you and our neighbors. We have not loved you with our whole heart and we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
P: The Lord is gracious and merciful. He promises to forgive our sins. Therefore, upon this, your confession, as a called and ordained servant of the Lord, in the stead and by the command of my Lord, Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen. Praise the Lord! Great are His mercies, they are new every morning. Great is His Faithfulness.
Song of Praise and Thanksgiving: Beautiful Savior
Beautiful Savior, King of creation, Son of God and Son of man.
Truly I’d love Thee, Truly I’d serve Thee
Light of my soul, my joy my crown.
Fair are the meadows, fair is the woodlands
Robed in the flow’rs of blooming spring
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer.
He makes our sorrowing spirit sing
Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations, Son of God and Son of man.
Glory and honor, praise adoration
Now and forever more be Thine!
Memorial Day Prayer
Epistle Reading – Ephesians 1:15–23
For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.
That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
Gospel Reading – Luke 24:44–53
He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”
Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
Children’s Message
Sermon Hymn – In Christ Alone
In Christ alone my hope is found.
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground.
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All. Here in the love of Christ I stand
In Christ alone, who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save
‘Til on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satis-fied
For every sin on Him was laid, Here in the death of Christ I live
There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day,
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victor-y, Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine,
Bought with the precious blood of Christ
No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand ‘til He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand
‘til He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand
‘til He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand
Sermon – “Oh, To Spend One Day with Jesus”
Acts 1:1–11
In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

Verse 1:
The moon and stars they wept. The morning sun was dead
The Savior of the world was fallen.
His body on the cross. His blood poured out for us.
The weight of every curse upon Him
Verse 2:
One final breath He gave, As Heaven looked away
The Son of God was laid in darkness.
A battle in the grave. The war on death was waged.
The power of hell forever broken
Pre-Chorus:
The ground began to shake. The stone was rolled away
His perfect love could not be overcome
Now death where is your sting. Our resurrected King
Has rendered you defeated
Chorus:
Forever, He is glorified. Forever, He is lifted high
Forever, He is risen. He is alive; He is alive!

(Chorus)
Bridge:
We sing hallelujah. We sing hallelujah
We sing hallelujah. The Lamb has overcome

Christian Freedom:
I mentioned this last time we celebrated Communion, but it bears mentioning again. While some will want to participate, I understand that others will not want to take the risk. That is perfectly fine. Communion is a blessing, not a required work. Our Christian freedom allows us to act according to our conscience and I do not want anyone to feel pressured to participate. In Romans, God’s Word addresses how some people felt compelled to follow certain food laws and others did not. God’s Word encouraged each to follow their conscience and not rebuke or condemn the other for following theirs.
“One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another?” – Romans 14:1-4a
Therefore, if you desire to receive Communion, you are welcome to come. If you feel it’s better for you to refrain, for now, you are welcome stay home. Both are loved by God and by your brothers and sisters in Christ.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Kurt

Invocation
Confession and Forgiveness:
P: Our Heavenly Father asks us to come into His presence.
C: But we are sinful and unworthy.
P: Yes, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, but Jesus Christ died on the cross that we may be forgiven and washed clean of all our sins by His blood spilled on the cross.
C: Lord, if You wash us, we will certainly be clean and pure.
P: We take a moment to bow before the His cross and silently reflect on our lives and confess our sins.
(Time of silence for reflection and confession)
P: Let us confess, together, our sins to God our Father.
C: Heavenly Father, we confess that we are sinners. We have sinned against you and our neighbors. We have not loved you with our whole heart and we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not lived out our faith out in our community. We justly deserve Your punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I, therefore, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen
Song of Praise and Thanksgiving: Amazing Grace
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found.
Was blind but now I see.
T’was grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believed.
Through many dangers toils and snares,
We have already come,
T’was grace hath brought us safe thus far
And grace will lead us home
When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise,
Than when we’ve first begun
First Reading – Acts 17:10-13
As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.
But when the Jews in Thessalonica learned that Paul was preaching the word of God at Berea, some of them went there too, agitating the crowds and stirring them up.
Second Reading – 2 Peter 3:14-18
So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.

Sermon Hymn – Cornerstone
Verse 1:
My hope is built on nothing less,
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly trust in Jesus’ name
Chorus:
Christ alone, Cornerstone, Weak made strong in the Savior’s love
Through the storm He is Lord Lord of all
Verse 2:
When darkness seems to hide His face,
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil
My anchor holds within the veil
Bridge:
He is Lord. Lord of all
Verse 3:
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh may I then in Him be found
Dressed in His righteousness alone
Faultless, stand before the throne
Sermon – “The Bible Doesn’t Say That!”
Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God
the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
Amen
Benediction
Closing Song: Doxology
