21 DAYS OF PRAYER - DAY 13

Heavenly Father,

Praise be to Your name forever and ever; wisdom and power are Yours. You change times and seasons; You depose kings and raise up others. You give wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. You reveal deep and hidden things; You know what lies in darkness, and light dwells with You. I thank and praise you, God of the ages.

I confess that I have not always lived in such as way as to bring You glory. I have not loved You with my whole heart and I have not loved my neighbor as myself.

(take a moment to reflect on the past day and confess your sins.)

I am sorry for my sins and pray for Your great mercy. For the sake of Jesus Christ, please forgive me of all my sins.

Heavenly Father,

You speak the truth and are the source of all wisdom and understanding. Give me wisdom that I might understand Your ways and live according to them.

You reveal Yourself through Your Word. Give me a hunger to read Your Word each and every day and give me a desire to study Your Word with my brothers and sisters in the faith that we may grow in the knowledge and understanding of You.

The world proclaims its own wisdom. The devil spreads his lies. Even in the worldwide church there are teachings which are not according to Your Word. Give me the gift of discernment that I may know what is true. Help me to hold to Your truth and teach others. Defend me from the allure of sweet sounding lies which entice my sinful nature.

Lord, may Faith Lutheran Church be a family of believers who are passionate about studying Your Word regularly and teaching Your truth with love and confidence. May we be a place where people can come and grow in their knowledge and understanding of You.

Amen.

Heavenly Father,

You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will we exist and were created.

Yet, I confess that I have not always lived as Your creation. I have sought my own ways and my own will. I have not loved You with my whole heart and I have not loved my neighbor as myself.

Dear Jesus,

You have created all things and all people, including me and my neighbor. Today, I pray for my neighbors, especially those who do not have a church home and those who do not believe in You at all.

I ask that you would create opportunities for me to get to know my neighbors better and that through those relationships I would be able to show them Your love and share the Gospel. I pray that through my relationships with them, they would see You, receive faith, and find a church home at Faith Lutheran Church.

Help me to be willing to endure the inconveniences of true and deep relationships with others, to be able to help them in their weakness and show them true love. Protect us in our neighborhood and give us a true sense of community with each other.

I especially lift up the following people to You…

Heavenly Father,

My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For He has regarded the lowly state of His servant. I am truly blessed. For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.

I confess that I have not loved You with my whole heart, I have not loved my neighbor as myself, and I have not always loved the next generation as I should, sharing with them Your wisdom and teaching them the faith.

Heavenly Father,

In Acts chapter 2 You tell us “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.“

I pray for the next generation. I ask that You would create in them the saving faith that you have created in people in every generation, that You would call them Your children and hold them close to You.

As our American culture moves further and further away from You, protect them and fill them with Your Spirit. Hold them firm in the faith You give them until the day of Your return. Help them to be light to their generation, living boldly for You and sharing the love of Your Gospel with their generation and the next.

Help those of us who are older to remember the youth and desire to share Your Word and Your love with them. Help us to raise them up in the faith that they would not leave the path of faith You have laid out.

I pray especially for the Youth at Faith Lutheran Church. Create in them hearts of joy. Protect them and strengthen them. Strengthen them in the faith of their baptism. Give them a desire to know You and guide the adults as they teach them and raise them.

Heavenly Father,

I praise You, God, that You are the same yesterday and today and forever, and that You are our solid Rock, our Fortress, our Rescuer, our Shield, our salvation, and our place of safety.

I confess that I have not always followed Your will and Your ways. I have not loved You with my whole heart. I have not kept the Sabbath day holy and have allowed other activities to take priority over gathering to worship You and I have not loved my neighbor as myself.

Dear Jesus,

I thank You for the blessing of worship. In worship You bless us incredibly. You forgive our sins. You strengthen us with Your Body and Blood. You increase our knowledge and faith through Your Word as well as guide us through that same Word.

In worship You also strengthen the bonds of Your people and unite us in You. You hear our prayers and calm our souls. In response, we praise Your holy name and offer our thanksgiving.

Lord, may Your people not grow weary of gathering together for worship. May we always see the rich blessings You give us in worship and hunger for them.

May we also see the needs of our brothers and sisters in the faith which can be met in the meeting together and desire to show them love by helping to meet those needs.

I ask that You would bless the worship at Faith Lutheran Church. Guide Pastor Kurt and give Him wisdom and true understanding of Your Word that he may faithfully proclaim Your Word each week. Be with every member of Faith that they would welcome all who come, be fed by Your Word and sacraments, and be strengthened in their service.

Bring others, as well, to worship, especially those who do not, yet, believe in You. May they hear Your Word, experience Your love, and receive faith.

I pray this in Jesus name.

Heavenly Father,

Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You. Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name. My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips.

When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You throughout the night. Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice. My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me.”

I confess that I have not loved You with my whole heart and I have not loved my neighbor as myself. I have allowed bitterness and selfishness in my relationships with others in my church and have, at times, allowed my thoughts or words to be against my brothers and sisters in Christ.

Help who attend Faith Lutheran Church to work together as a unified body. Give us one purpose and vision to run towards, using the various gifts and talents You have given us towards that purpose.

Help us to work well together, building one another up and not tearing each other down. When one harms another, give them a repentant heart and the other a heart of forgiveness and grace.

Deepen the relationships of those who attend Faith that we may care for one another as You care for Your church. Help us to confide in one another and to properly keep that trust. Help us to care for each other’s needs and show each other true love.

Finally, Lord, help us to spur one another along towards good works and to share the the good news of Your salvation with others.

You have given us life and each breath we breathe is from You. Everyday, there are many demands on our time. Help us to remember our lives are Yours and remember what is truly important.

You have equipped Your saints for ministry, giving each of us talents and spiritual gifts according to Your grace. May we neither hide our talents nor grow proud from them, but use them with the others in Your body to Your glory.

Help us to go the distance for You.

Heavenly Father,You created the universe and that is it in it with the power of Your Word. By that same creative Word, you speak life into our spiritually dead lives to give us new life in Jesus. Thank you for our lives both body and spirit.

Though You are my creator and redeemer, I confess that I have sinned against You and against my neighbor. I have not always loved my brothers and sisters in Christ as I should and I have not always used the gifts, resources, and talents You have given me for Your Kingdom.

You have rescued us from the kingdom of the world and made us citizens of the Kingdom of God. You have gathered Your people from all nations and joined us together as one body, unified in Christ Jesus.

Bind Your church together. Help us to love one another with the same selfless love You have showed us. Help us to forgive one another as You have forgiven us. Help us to speak Your Word to each other to build each other up, sharpen our understanding, grow in our faith, and grow in love.

You have given each of us talents, spiritual gifts, unique resources, and purpose. As a body has many parts which work together for the good of the whole body, help us, as your church to work together for Your glory and the good of Your church. Give us strength to use the talents, gifts, and resources for Your purposes and trust You will work through them.

You have also put us in a specific location. Help us to see the needs of our community and serve them in Your Name that they may glorify You. Individually, help us to see the opportunities You have provided in our work and neighborhoods to be Your ambassadors. May we bring Your message of reconciliation.

We ask for Your blessings upon the church around the world and the congregation of Faith Lutheran Church. Strengthen us in our faith and bless the ministries we engage in.

Heavenly Father,

We thank you for Your love and mercy. You tell us in Your Word that Your mercies are new every morning. Truly, we need Your mercies every day.

Lord, I ask for Your mercy, now. I have looked to the wisdom of the world rather than Your wisdom. I have sinned against You and against others.

21 Days of Prayer – Day 1

day 1 - Let us pray

Thanksgiving is approaching. It’s just 3 weeks away. On Thanksgiving we celebrate with a feast and give thanks for all God has done and given us. This year, as Thanksgiving approaches, I would like to ask you to join with me in a season of prayer and fasting leading up to the day of feasting and thanksgiving.

Over the next 21 days I encourage you to set aside some time each day for prayer. Pray for your needs, concerns, and praises as well as the for Faith Lutheran Church. Pray for the people of Faith and pray for our ministry as a church. Pray also for people of Wesley Chapel, especially those who do not yet know Jesus as their savior.

You may also choose to fast on some of the days. While there are some examples of fasts that lasted a full day or even several days, the typical fast people observed in the Bible is one where they would eat their morning meal and then not consume food during the day until they broke their fast with their evening meal.

The purpose of the fast is to discipline and restrain your body from the things of the flesh while focusing on prayer and God’s Word. This is done as a means of humbling the flesh and curbing the desires of the flesh.

As you fast, if you choose to do so, let the feelings of hunger you experience remind you to pray. Spend the time you would normally spend eating by reading God’s Word and meditating on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Through His Word, the Lord will bless and nourish you.

“Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am’ ” (Is 58:8–9).

Heavenly Father,

I come to you today like a child boldly coming to their Father for my provision, comfort, strength, and care. Hear my prayer and you have promised to do. I begin by confessing my sins and seeking your mercy through Jesus Christ.

Lord, you say that if we confess our sins, you will forgive us. I trust in your promises.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Remind us every day that you are our strength and our refuge, that we would call out to you in prayer every day of our lives. You are the giver of all good things. You sustain us and all creation. So, we come to the door and knock. We ask for your grace and your mercy. We seek your face.

Hear our prayers, oh Lord. Bless us.

This Is Most Certainly True

“Amen” – The Lord’s Prayer

If you ask a child what, “amen” means, many will tell you it means, “the end.” It makes sense. After all, most of the time we use the word to close our prayers. In the mind of the child, it’s like we’re telling God that we are done praying.

Amen, however, does not mean, “the end.” It has a few uses within the Scriptures. Throughout the Old Testament, it tends to be used to say that something is reliable or trustworthy. It is sometimes used as a verb meaning to be faithful or to take care. At times, amen, is used to confirm the statement that preceded it, as if to say, “so shall it be.”

Paul, similarly, in the New Testament uses amen at the end of prayers, benedictions, and doxologies, emphasizing that what was just written is true and/or will happen (so shall it be).

Jesus, however, used amen in an interesting way. He would start sentences with, “Amen, amen,” meaning, “very truly,” or “amen lego humin,” meaning, “truly I tell you.” He used amen to emphasize the truth of what He was about to say.

Whereas, the prophets of the Old Testament would say, “Thus says the Lord,” to show the authority of what they said, Jesus called upon His own authority as God, saying, “Truly I tell you.”

So, what about us? Why do we use the word, “Amen?”

Today, we use amen much like the people of the Old Testament and Paul in the New Testament. Sometimes people use it to express agreement with what they just heard.

“We are all sinners saved by the grace of Jesus Christ who died on the cross for us.”

“Amen!”

Most often we use it to end our prayers. When we do we are saying, “This is true.” or “So, shall it be.” We are expressing the truthfulness of what was prayed as well as our confidence in the promises of God.

In the Lord’s Prayer, we are saying that God is our Father, His kingdom does come. His will is done. He will provide for us. He does forgive us and we will forgive others. He will protect us. All that we have spoken in this prayer is most certainly true and we are in agreement with it.

Heavenly Father,

You are good. You are the source of all truth. Your promises are all true. Jesus is the way the truth and the life. So, we pray with confidence that you will fulfill all Your promises and that all Your ways are good and true.
