“Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,” – Ephesians 6:18
Pray for Your Brothers and Sisters in Christ
We’ve talked a lot about things you can be doing to live on mission. However, the mission of the church is just that, the church’s mission. It’s not just you. What a relief, right!?
Since it’s God’s church and the mission of the whole church, let’s pray for one another.
Pray that our brothers and sisters in Christ would be kept in the faith.
Pray that they would be healthy and safe.
Pray that they would have opportunities to share Jesus with others and be bold to take those opportunities.
Today: Pray for some of the other members of the church.
“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,” – 1 Timothy 2:1
Pray With People
Have you ever had someone tell you something difficult they were going through and responded, “I’ll pray for you.”? I used to do that all the time.
Then one day I told someone something I was going through and they said, “Can I pray for you?” I said, “Sure,” thinking that was the end of it. Then, they did something weird, they put their hand on my shoulder and they started praying.
I said it was weird, but it was actually pretty cool. Not only did I appreciate it, but it had meaning between us as friends. I learned something that day. Since that day, I usually ask to pray with the person rather than telling them I’ll pray for them (at some point later on).
You can do this with both Christians and those who do not, yet, believe. I’ve found that most people say it’s fine, though some say, “No.” That’s fine. In addition to the benefit of the prayer itself, you also become known to them as someone who they can come to when they have a problem and someone who knows about God.
Today: Consider praying with people, not just saying you’ll pray for them later.
Note – This is something you can do for any situation, not just praying about people believing in Jesus. Maybe their sick, lost a loved-one, are having a rough time at work, etc. Also, the prayer can be simple and to the point.
Where do you live? Are there people who live around you? Chances are, you have neighbors. However, if you are like most people in the U.S., today, you don’t know many, if any of them.
It’s a change we’ve seen in the last 50 years of our society. With air conditioning, TV, electronic devices, and bigger homes we’ve become more and more isolated from our neighbors.
What if we affected another change? What if over the next several years we in the church seek to have those relationships with our neighbors again?
Today: Start thinking of ways to connect with your neighbors. Maybe even go meet a few, today.
Some ideas of how:
Host a Friday night happy hour in your driveway with free drinks and snacks.
Ask your neighbors to get together for a block party.
Knock on your neighbors’ doors and introduce yourself. Maybe bring some cookies.
Sit by a window or outside and when you see a neighbor walking by, go out and talk to them.
One way of looking at the Gospel is God meeting the needs and healing the brokeness of people. Through Jesus’ work on the cross our need for forgiveness was met. Jesus heals our brokenness.
One of the most powerful ways we can show this to people is by showing them how God has met our needs and healed our brokenness. To do that, however, means we have to reveal our needs and our brokenness. We have to be vulnerable.
Not only is this a powerful way to show people how God can help them, but it destroys the false image that Christians think they are perfect and are just judging non-Christians. When people can see that we are just as sinful and broken as they are (and know we are)then they can see the Savior who came for us also came for them.
Today: Consider how open you are with people regarding your weaknesses and where sharing your struggles may help.
Love is a powerful thing. However, love is also something we don’t always understand in out society. We say love things and people, but our actions don’t always show it.
“Let love be genuine.” – Romans 12:9
When it comes to Christians in the U.S., today, people outside the church tend to be skeptical. They watch us. They hear us talk about love and that’s great, but they want to see it if they are going to believe we mean it.
When people know you love them with authentic love, they are more willing to open up to you and trust you.
This isn’t just for people who want to share Jesus with. They will also see how we treat others. So, if we seek to love everyone we interact with, genuinely. Beyond mission, it’s just good to love people genuinely.
This may mean being willing to be inconvenienced and sacrificing our wants to help others.
Today: Think about how you interact with others and how you can put your love for people into action.
When we talk about “making disciples of all nations,” it can sound overwhelming and distant. We may think of sending missionaries to other parts of the world. However, the missionary field is much closer. It’s all around us.
The mission of bringing Jesus to those who don’t know Him means connecting with people who don’t know Him. The good (and bad) news is that you probably already know some people who don’t believe in Jesus. So, you’ve already connected with them at least to some level.
These people who you already know are a great place to start. One of the biggest hurdles is already passed. Now, you can be intentional about strengthening that connection and deepening your relationship with them.
I say, “be intentional,” because it often takes intentionality to strengthen a relationship.
Today: Think about who you already know who needs Jesus. Pray for them. Think about ways you can deepen your relationship with them.
One of the reasons Weight Watchers has been so successful for many people is the meetings. The diet plan itself, of course, works, but you have to stick to it if it’s going to work for you.
Having others to support you and hold you accountable can be a very helpful thing. God has given us the church so we don’t have to live our faith on our own, this includes being about mission.
Today: Find someone or some people to team up with.
This shouldn’t be a harsh thing. It’s a way to encourage each other, pray together, and come up ideas.
The idea of sharing the Gospel with others can be pretty scary. Most people feel reluctant. In part, that is because our society has created barriers that can make it awkward. In part, it’s because we don’t feel like we have any idea what we are doing.
We can’t change the societal norms easily, but we can learn how to deal with them and we can learn more about how to talk with others about Jesus so we feel more prepared.
Today: Pick up a book about sharing Jesus with others and start reading it. You don’t have to finish it today, but start it and commit to reading it to the end.
There are many books to choose from. A simple search in Google or Amazon will give you some good options.
A Word of Caution: There are a lot of people who write evangelism books who think our presentation of the Gospel is what will “convince” someone to believe rather than faith being the work of the Holy Spirit. They tend to put an emphasis on technique. The techniques they talk about may still be good, but know that God is responsible for the results, not you. It’s good to know this as you read these types of books.
Pray for Opportunities to Love Others and Share the Gospel
In Matthew 9 Jesus talked to His disciples about “the harvest.” These were people who needed the Gospel and would receive faith.
“Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.’” – Matthew 9:37-38
He told them there are a lot of people out there who need see God’s love and hear the Gospel, but not many people doing it. So, they should pray that God would send people to do that. That’s how Matthew 9 ends.
Matthew 10, then, starts with Jesus sending the disciples to share His love and proclaim the Gospel. I wonder if the disciples realized as they were praying for God to send laborers, they were praying for themselves.
Yesterday, we prayed for people who need Jesus. You can keep doing that today as well, but today, also pray that God would send laborers, including you, to share His love and Good News with others.
Today: Pray that He would give you opportunities to show his love and share the Gospel.
When talking about mission and evangelism there is a lot of focus on things like how to share the Gospel and how to connect with people. These things are good, but I believe prayer is even more important.
Prayer is powerful. When we realize that God is the one who changes people and creates faith in their hearts (not our brilliant presentation of the Gospel), we can see how important prayer is in the mission of the church. It is the first and possibly most important part of what we do for the mission of the church.
Today: Make a list of some people you know who you don’t think believe in Jesus. Start praying for them every day (more if you’d like) that they would receive faith.
